Chapter 515 – An Unexpected Incident
The injured man was conscious and agreed to let the pharmacists use him for the exam trial. After all, where else could he get the chance to have a senior-level pharmacist personally prepare medicine for him?
However, the moment he saw that the one who had made the trauma medicine was a girl barely in her teens, his expression changed instantly, and he backed out. “No, no! I’m here to test the medicine of a senior pharmacist, and you expect me to let some snot-nosed little girl mess with me?”
Gu Ye snatched the trauma medicine from the judge’s hand and said irritably, “You don’t know quality when you see it. Using my medicine on him would only insult it!”
The rough, burly man glared. “You little brat, you got quite the temper, don’t you?”
The young man beside him, who looked like an attendant from a medical hall, noticed the six lingzhi embroidered at Gu Ye’s collar and whispered into the brute’s ear, “Watch your mouth, and don’t bring trouble onto yourself! Think—what kind of place is this? If she were incompetent, how would she even qualify for a senior-level pharmacist assessment?”
The brute was about to argue further when a sudden commotion erupted, “Make way! Move aside! A life’s at stake!”
The burly man was pushed aside as five or six people rushed in carrying a stretcher. On it lay a pale young man with half a bamboo pole lodged in his abdomen.
Elder Doctor Liang, supported by two assistants from the Jimin Hall, followed behind, panting heavily. When he saw Gu Ye, it was as if he had found a savior. “Miss Gu, help, please save my grandson!”
The injured man was supported upright, and everyone present drew in a sharp breath. The bamboo pole had pierced right through the young man’s body, its pointed tip protruding from his back.
It turned out that Elder Doctor Liang’s grandson had slipped while repairing the roof at home and fell, landing on the edge of a fence and right onto the bamboo pole, which pierced his abdomen.
All the judges immediately gathered around. Seeing the wound, they couldn’t help but shake their heads and sigh. It was a penetrating injury, and it was still unclear whether any internal organs had been damaged. The situation was dangerous.
Chairman Rao spoke up, “This is a pharmacist assessment. We are here to make medicine, not treat injuries. Sir, you should take your grandson to a doctor immediately. I heard that Jimin Pharmacy has physicians skilled in suturing. Go there…”
A pharmacist from Dongling Kingdom, standing nearby, reminded him, “Elder Doctor Liang is a physician from Jimin. He himself is capable of suturing…”
If even a Jimin physician is powerless, what good does it do to bring the patient here? Chairman Rao was about to have the injured man carried out, so as not to disturb the pharmacists’ assessment, when a clear, crisp female voice rang out, “Yue Yuan, ride quickly back and bring my medical kit, and don’t forget the four luminous pearls from the box as well!”
“Miss! The medical kit has arrived!! And the box with your luminous pearls. We didn’t have the key, but we brought it along anyway!” Gu Ye turned to the speaker. It was Tang Xiaoxiao, her timely helper!
Elder Doctor Liang had been seeing patients at the Jimin Pharmacy in the West District all day. He hadn’t expected that, just as night was falling, a critically injured patient would arrive, and his treasured grandson, no less.
This grandson had the greatest talent for medicine; even in suturing, he learned faster and better than his grandfather. Elder Doctor Liang had been grooming him as his successor. Who could have imagined…
Faced with such a severe wound, he felt powerless, but he couldn’t just watch his grandson die. He thought of Gu Ye, who could open up a patient’s abdomen, remove intestines, and have them come out unscathed. Perhaps she could treat this injury!
Knowing that Gu Ye was in the middle of her pharmacist assessment, he arranged for the work at his shop to be put on hold so they could carry the patient to the assessment site. By coincidence, Tang Xiaoxiao had gone to the Jimin Pharmacy to buy raw medicinal herbs and was already learning basic herb preparation. Seeing the situation, she kicked off her shoes and ran all the way home.
Being too young to carry Gu Ye’s enormous medical chest alone, she enlisted the help of a rough-handed servant woman from Mingzhu Pavilion. Although Tang Xiaoxiao was only a second-tier maid, she was highly valued by Gu Ye, and the servants naturally did not dare offend someone favored by their young mistress.
One clever servant, upon hearing that the medicine chest was needed by Gu Ye, assumed it was for the assessment, and immediately consulted Steward Zhou. They dispatched a carriage at full speed, ensuring the medical chest arrived just in time.
Gu Ye praised Tang Xiaoxiao briefly, then quickly prepared for the surgery. Hua Hao and Yue Yuan, both accustomed to assisting her, unpacked the surgical instruments from the box and meticulously sterilized them.
“Esteemed Chairmen, may I borrow your table for a moment?” Gu Ye noticed the long tables in front of the judges. It was perfect in both height and width for use as an operating table. She asked for their permission and requisitioned one of the tables.
Chairman Rao snapped out of his daze and couldn’t help but ask, “Miss Gu, what are you doing—?”
Gu Ye hurriedly replied, “Oh, I forgot to mention. Emergency medicine is my side specialty. Chairman, please step aside so I don’t delay treating the patient.”
The pharmacist judges were invited to stand aside. Elder Doctor Liang and his two assistants held the luminous pearls to provide light. Gu Ye administered a local anesthetic to the injured young man and carefully cut open his clothing to expose the wound.
Hua Hao stepped forward to clean the wound, while Gu Ye took the surgical scalpel and delicately separated the skin and tissue around the injury. Yue Yuan assisted with hemostats to control bleeding.
After removing the bamboo rod, Gu Ye carefully examined the wound. She spoke softly to the conscious, slightly anxious young man: “Don’t worry. No internal organs were harmed, and there’s no danger. You’ll recover fully soon.”
Gu Ye quickly treated the wound, and by the time the final stitch was in place, night had not yet fully fallen. Because she had handled everything properly, the patient didn’t even need a blood transfusion, and thus, the surgery was completed. She applied her newly concocted golden sore medicine to the wound and wrapped it with a layer of dressing.
The judges who had gathered around the makeshift operating table were thoroughly astonished. They had just witnessed a textbook-level surgical procedure: opening the abdomen to remove a foreign object, then suturing the wound. To them, it was utterly extraordinary.
These judges had all been selected from ninth-level pharmacists. Compared with the surgical procedure itself, they paid more attention to the medications used during the operation.
The young girl didn’t reveal what medicine she had applied to the patient, yet from start to finish, the young man remained fully conscious. Although he was understandably a bit anxious, as anyone else in such a situation, he expressed no pain at all. Could it be that the girl had used the long-lost ‘mafeisan’?
“All right! You can carry him back now. Once the anesthetic wears off, he’ll feel some pain. If it’s not severe, try to avoid using painkillers. Most painkillers on the market will, to some extent, affect wound healing. Elder Doctor Liang, you’re well aware of post-operative care, right?” Gu Ye removed her mask and meticulously washed her hands. Working without surgical gloves was certainly inconvenient.
Elder Doctor Liang finally exhaled in relief. His legs went weak, and he nearly collapsed to the ground. Seeing this, the young man couldn’t help but anxiously call out, “Grandpa!”
