Chapter 493 — Taking Out Her Anger
“Shut up! You’re so annoying!” Gu Ye’s face was set in a scowl as she strode out without looking back.
In the courtyard, she ran into Gong Lishang—the troublemaker. The scoundrel wore an expression as if he were watching a good show, which made Gu Ye even more irritated. She raised her hand and flung a handful of powdered medicine at him.
Gong Lishang’s folding fan flapped violently as he leapt backward, nearly tripping over a guard underfoot. Luckily, he moved fast; otherwise, he’d have ended up like his other guards, sprawled on the ground, unable to get up.
“Miss Ye, I haven’t offended you today. You’re just taking out your anger on me!” Gong Lishang said, looking a bit embarrassed as he regained his balance.
“I am taking out my anger on you, so what are you going to do about it?” Gu Ye’s little fire flared from her head as she said fiercely. “Who told you to be so clueless, standing right in the middle of the road?”
“You… You are unreasonable!!” Gong Lishang shouted, shaking his sleeves in frustration. Yet when he looked back at the Fourth Prince slumped helplessly in the hall and Ling Juechen standing still in the center like a statue, he felt a lot better.
Gu Ye stomped heavily out of the post station and came to a stop at the gate, lowering her head in a sulk. Her fiery anger made the Duke and her brothers tiptoe around her, afraid that a single wrong word or expression might trigger her wrath again.
Xiaoliu, Chu Mushan, couldn’t help but let out a snicker.
Gu Ye narrowed her eyes, her stance like an approaching storm. “Sixth Brother, is it funny? Hmm??”
Her ‘hmm’ rose slightly in pitch, and the corners of her eyes carried a commanding presence, sending a shiver down Chu Mushan’s spine. Every hair on his body stood on end.
With strong survival instincts, he stammered, “Sister, I’m not laughing at you. I just… it’s incredible that the Crown Princes of Li and Yan, and even the legendary War God, Prince Ning, have all been completely handled by you. You’re so formidable, Sister…”
The Duke shot him a sharp glare. “Stop making things worse!”
Any one of those three was not someone to provoke. The Duke mentally prepared for how to help his daughter handle the aftermath without letting her shoulder even the slightest responsibility.
“Eh? It’s raining…” Chu Mushan touched a raindrop landing on his nose.
Before he finished speaking, large drops began pelting down in a torrential downpour. He quickly removed his cloak and held it over his sister’s head. Her frail body couldn’t get soaked!
“The carriage is here! Sister, get in quickly!” Chu Xiaosi had somehow rented a carriage and, together with Xiaoliu, helped Gu Ye inside. No sooner had she climbed in than the rain poured down like a waterfall from the sky.
Hearing the downpour, Ling Juechen shouted anxiously, “Where is Yin Kui?!”
Yin Kui leapt down from the beams of the main hall and appeared in front of his master.
Ling Juechen said, “I have an antidote pill in my arms, the one in the blue bottle. Take one and swallow it.”
Gong Lishang strolled in, brushing rain off his clothes. Seeing Ling Juechen standing stiffly in that strange pose, he wasn’t about to miss the chance to mock him.
“Oh! Prince Ning, what’s this about? Feeding a baby while holding it? Tsk-tsk… what happened, someone sealed your acupoints?” Then, pretending not to know, he added, “Who’s strong enough to subdue the mighty War God?”
Ling Juechen restored his usual cold and composed expression, giving him a faint glance, and swallowed the antidote pill fed to him by Yin Kui. The medicine Ye’er gave him was definitely top-grade. In an instant, he was able to move again.
“Yin Kui, go get an umbrella and bring it to the gate.” Before he finished speaking, Yin Kui dashed into the pouring rain.
Autumn rain carried a chill. The Chu brothers didn’t mind much themselves, but they feared their little sister getting wet and catching a cold.
If the lady missed this convention, she would surely blame him, and his path to winning her favor would become even harder.
When Ling Juechen reached the gate, no one was there. The streets were shrouded in rain, not a single figure in sight. He broke one of the antidote pills in half and forced it into the mouths of two guards.
Once they could move and speak, he asked, “Ye’er… How did that little girl in red leave?”
The guard respectfully reported, “Your Highness, that group just rented a carriage and took the girl away… This subordinate failed in his duty. Please punish me, Your Highness!”
Ling Juechen had no mind to ask whether he was at fault. He asked instead, “The little girl didn’t get wet, did she?”
One of the guards, seeing the usually cold Prince Ning showing such concern for the little girl, hurriedly explained in detail, “Your Highness, don’t worry. As soon as the rain started, the girl’s brother used his cloak to shield her. The carriage arrived in time. The little girl in red didn’t get a single drop of rain!”
“That’s good…” Ling Juechen’s sharp eyes gazed down the rain-shrouded street, lingering there for a long moment.
Meanwhile, the Fourth Prince had taken the antidote and regained his strength, coming over holding an umbrella.
Standing beside Ling Juechen, the Fourth Prince stretched his sore muscles and sighed. “Just as you said, Cousin, you can’t offend a pharmacist! Future sister-in-law has quite the temper. Your path to winning her heart is going to be full of thorns and dangers. Good luck!”
“Your Highness, who is responsible for this outcome in the end?” Ling Juechen’s words carried the coldness of a knife; the Fourth Prince could almost hear the grinding of his teeth.
The Fourth Prince hurriedly said, “I was just trying to be helpful! Who knew good intentions could cause such trouble!”
Then, the Fourth Prince asked with curious glee, “Cousin, how did you manage to get that little girl into your arms? Just now, the way you two were so tender and affectionate… it almost made me want to get married myself!”
Ling Juechen glanced at him lightly. “At your age, Your Highness, it really is time to take a wife. I believe the young county princess from the Duke of Hong’s household would be quite suitable. She is of equal standing and age to Your Highness. A perfect match!”
“What?!” the Fourth Prince exclaimed, shrugging in protest. “Cousin, don’t ruin me! Everyone knows Lady Jun is notorious for her tyranny, cruelty, and viciousness. She’s past twenty, but no one dares marry her. You’re pushing me straight into a pit of fire! Cousin, I swear this was an innocent mistake. You can’t gamble with my lifelong happiness!”
A cold glint flashed in Ling Juechen’s eyes. If I can’t marry my little girl, then you can go ahead and marry that venomous county princess!
The Fourth Prince felt cold sweat trickling down his spine: I’m doomed! I’ve trapped myself! Cousin always keeps his word. Oh, all Buddhas, all Bodhisattvas, all Three Pure Ones… please help Cousin win over my sister-in-law soon. Amen!
When the Duke and his sons returned home, they were drenched like drowned rats. Gu Ye, however, had only her dress hem wet from the rain.
Lady Jun quickly had the kitchen make ginger soup and watched as every man in the house drank a bowl. When she tried to persuade her daughter to take a few sips, the Duke stopped her with a glance.
Lady Jun then came out of her daughter’s room and asked, “What happened? Bao’er looks very unhappy.”
