Chapter 950: With Me as Your Son-in-Law, You Won’t Regret It — Just Accept It?

A wedding celebration only happens once in a lifetime, so it has to be perfect. Later, when he and Xiao Shitou look back on today, there won’t be any regrets.

He wasn’t planning on having a wedding as grand as Feng Qingbai’s, but still, he wanted Xiao Shitou to be the envy of all the women in the capital.

As a merchant marrying a general’s daughter, he knew that behind the scenes, many people mocked Xiao Shitou, calling him a catch beneath her station.

Although he was just a merchant with no great skills—neither literary nor martial—he had a lifetime to prove to Shi Xianrou and the whole world that she hadn’t married the wrong man.

“Your tail is wagging to the sky, calm down a bit,” Feng Qingbai quietly reminded him as he walked alongside.

He couldn’t see the smug expression he’d just worn, his nose practically in the air, but it was obvious he wasn’t thinking about anything good.

After mounting his white horse, Qian Wanjin smiled and looked back at Feng Qingbai. “Hey, this might be the only time in my life I get to walk properly ahead of you, right? Let me be a little smug, will you? Why do you have to be the first to throw cold water on me? Today is my big wedding day!”

“I’m just reminding you, it’s one thing to lose face in front of your own people, but don’t embarrass yourself out on the street, or you’ll get trampled beyond repair.”

Qian Wanjin responded with a big eye-roll.

He was happy today, so he wouldn’t argue with Feng Qingbai.

Besides, even if he really embarrassed himself, Feng Qingbai would have his back.

He has got a solid backing.

Qian Wanyin walked quietly beside the two, speaking little and just listening to their conversation. His face showed no particular expression, but in his eyes, there was a trace of self-mockery.

A few years ago, he still had some ambitions, but now, all those ambitions had long been crushed by reality.

With Feng Qingbai, the Emperor, and Liu Yusheng in the picture, he knew he could never outmatch his older brother in this lifetime.

He had accepted his fate; only his mother still refused to see the truth, constantly trying to find ways for him to build ties with the King.

Who was Feng Qingbai? A man who had stood firm in the court for so many years, never once toppled. His cunning was probably sharper than anyone else’s, and there was no way their petty schemes could slip past his eyes.

He ignored them simply because he looked down on them.

The wedding procession, loud with blowing horns and beating drums, marched along the main street of the capital toward the General’s Manor.

Crowds of commoners lined the streets to watch. The eldest son of the capital’s richest merchant family was getting married. This gossip would keep the people talking for months. Even though the weather was cold, the sound of celebration drew many from alleys and lanes.

Besides the onlookers, shopkeepers and owners of tea houses and taverns also pushed through the crowd to congratulate the groom on his white horse.

Their social status was low; they weren’t invited to the Qian family banquet, but compared to those desperate to squeeze into the event, their congratulations were more sincere.

Many of these people had revived their businesses thanks to the nourishing teas and medicinal wines sold by the Qian family, finding a livelihood amid the tough competition among big merchants.

Most of the people held a deep sense of gratitude in their hearts toward the Qian family and the King’s Consort.

Qian Wanjin nodded in acknowledgment to every person who squeezed forward to offer congratulations, his smile never leaving his face the entire way. By the time they reached the General’s Manor, his face had gone stiff from smiling so much.

At the gate of the General’s Manor, another large crowd had gathered.

Because Shi Kewei’s daughter was getting married, he had specially submitted a memorial to take a two-month leave and rushed back from the northern border to preside over her wedding.

Standing beside him were subordinates and comrades he had formed strong bonds with on the battlefield. Each one of them was tall and burly. Just by standing there, their aura made it obvious they were seasoned warriors, exuding a strong and imposing military presence.

Not a single one of them was smiling; all wore serious expressions and looked at Qian Wanjin as though he were a bandit here to steal someone away.

With a lineup like that, any ordinary person would have been trembling in their boots, but not the thick-skinned Qian Wanjin. He was still grinning like a fool at the group of men.

“Father-in-law, I’ve come to fetch Xiao Shitou.”

“You and Xianrou have been engaged for several years now. Once my daughter set her heart on you, that was it. As her father, there was nothing I could do to change her mind,” Shi Kewei said sternly, ignoring Qian Wanjin’s silly smile. “All these years, you refused to get married. I watched my daughter grow older year by year, yet I still let you do as you pleased. I’ve been very dissatisfied with you. Are you aware of that?” Shi Kewei took the lead, completely ignoring Qian Wanjin’s cheeky grin, and spoke with a serious expression.

Behind Qian Wanjin stood the King. Under normal circumstances, Shi Kewei should have given him some face. But today, it was his daughter getting married. He had to say what needed to be said.

Even with the King backing the Qian family, he would not back down and risk his daughter being mistreated in the future.

Looking at the solemn man before him, whose eyes were filled with a father’s concern for his daughter, Qian Wanjin finally dropped his playful grin and nodded seriously. “Dad, don’t worry. Xiao Shitou will never suffer any grievance after marrying me. If anything serious happens, I’ll be the one standing in front to protect her. In daily life, I’m the wife, she’s my world!”

“Pfft!” Despite the serious atmosphere, someone behind Shi Kewei couldn’t help but let out a stifled laugh.

Once that first chuckle escaped, it quickly rippled into a wave of suppressed amusement.

“General, the kid has got a point. Back in the army, Xianrou was already known as ‘the man’. With her fists alone, that pretty boy of a young master wouldn’t stand a chance. There is no way he could bully her!”

“I heard she even calls Young Master Qian her ‘wife’ on the regular. I thought that was just some private joke, but now he’s admitted it in public. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”

For a man to openly admit in front of everyone that he’s the ‘wife’ in the relationship and place himself beneath his bride—it wasn’t just shamelessness. It was genuine love; love deep enough to humble himself completely.

“Dad, a wife marries a man for life—faithful and devoted, unwavering. I’m the same. With me as your son-in-law, you’re really not losing out. Come on, shouldn’t you accept me already?” Qian Wanjin added

Shi Kewei stared intently at Qian Wanjin, the corners of his mouth twitching ever so slightly. Then he quickly turned and walked inside with a huff. “Hmph, a man should cherish his wife. You’re calling yourself the wife. Doesn’t that mean Xianrou has to spoil you instead? Sounds nice enough, though!”

Not hearing any movement behind him, he barked, “What are you still standing there for? The auspicious hour is almost here. Go and fetch the bride!”

“Yes, my lord! Dad!”

As the mighty general strode inside, the sound of hurried footsteps and laughter followed behind him, and he couldn’t help the quiet smile that tugged at his lips.

Faithful and devoted. Unwavering. One love for a lifetime.

That little brat said it with his own mouth.

His daughter had waited so many years for that little rascal. It hadn’t been in vain. He was worth the wait.

A group of military men followed behind, hollering and laughing, their voices shaking the roof.

Qian Wanjin, with Feng Qingbai and Qian Wanyin by his side, strode cheerfully toward the bridal chamber, completely unfazed by the commotion behind him.

“Feng Qingbai, today I’m the groom, you know that?”

“Speak.”

“Your face is way too good-looking. You’re gonna steal all my thunder. On the way back, could you maybe cover it up? Otherwise, tomorrow everyone will be talking about the handsome King of Nanling instead of my big wedding.”

“Could you be any more shameless?”

“If necessary, why not?”
