Chapter 931: There Is No Poison in This World Without a Cure
Basin after basin of blood was carried out. In the midst of unbearable pain, several bundles of gauze were bitten through.
Even after increasing the amount of spirit spring water several times, it still couldn’t suppress the pain.
If it weren’t for the fact that the man’s muscles and bones were already shattered, he might have gone as far as self-harm—choosing death just to end the suffering.
When Feng Qingbai and Qian Wanjin rushed back, the room had only just been cleaned up from the mess.
Seeing the woman’s red, swollen eyes, both men felt their hearts sink instantly.
“What happened?” Feng Qingbai held the woman and let her lean against him.
“It started just after you left. I don’t know what went wrong. He suddenly began to hurt that badly.” Liu Yusheng choked with emotion.
They had known Xue Qinglian for years and were well aware of his temperament. He was always strong and prideful.
That was why, even when Xue Zhong had poisoned him and shattered his bones, he had endured the pain in silence. Even when it made him lose control of his bodily functions, he never let out a single cry.
Qian Wanjin and Feng Qingbai exchanged a glance, their jaws clenched tight. Finally, Qian Wanjin slammed the table hard. “Xue Zhong! That old, goddamn bastard. I’m going back now to kill him!”
“Stop! If he dies, Xue Qinglian won’t survive either!”
“If he lives, Xue Qinglian’s suffering will be worse than death!” Qian Wanjin roared, collapsing to a crouch and hugging his knees.
The man who was always proud and flamboyant broke down completely—crying without caring about his image at all.
“What do you mean?” Liu Yusheng, having calmed down slightly, sensed something was wrong and quickly asked Feng Qingbai.
“After we got to the Clan Court Prison, we tortured Xue Zhong for about an hour.”
Liu Yusheng’s pupils slowly widened. “…Xue Qinglian was in pain for an hour too!”
“It seems Xue Zhong wasn’t bluffing,” Feng Qingbai’s face darkened. “I suspect he didn’t just poison Qinglian. He also used a Gu curse on him. A kind that makes Qinglian physically experience everything Xue Zhong suffers.”
“…It’s a Life Link Gu,” came an extremely weak and hoarse voice from the bed. “If he hurts… I hurt too… If he dies, I… won’t survive either…”
No one knew when Xue Qinglian had regained consciousness. His face still bore the contorted traces of pain.
“No wonder. No wonder that old bastard dared to come to Nanling alone! He calculated we wouldn’t dare kill him!” Qian Wanjin’s eyes were bloodshot with rage.
“Still… crying… embarrassing…”
“You still have the strength to mock me? You should be laughing at your own stupidity first!” Qian Wanjin shot to the bedside, almost ready to strangle the man who could still laugh in that state. “And you dare call yourself the Grandmaster of Poison! You got poisoned, and cursed! Your reputation in the Jianghu must’ve been bought with silver! You’re a disgrace. Don’t you dare tell people you know me! I’ve got my dignity!”
“I’m… a patient… and you’re still yelling at me? Screw… your… whole family!”
“Oh-ho-ho! Who’s this delicate little lady talking back? Is that an insult or you flirting with me? Hahaha, you’re gonna kill me with laughter!” Qian Wanjin snarled through gritted teeth, glaring at the man.
He honestly wanted to rip this insufferable brat to pieces!
Xue Qinglian silently swore: If I could move, I’d poison this bastard to death.
Now that the root of the problem had been found, Liu Yusheng calmed down. She pulled the still fuming Qian Wanjin away before he ended up either giving himself a heart attack or worse, killing Xue Qinglian out of rage.
“How do you break a Life Link Gu?” she asked. Since they knew it was a Gu, and even what kind it was, then there had to be a way to break it.
Feng Qingbai sat down beside them, his usual calm demeanor returning. “Just get to the point. Skip the nonsense.”
Xue Qinglian opened his mouth slightly. “Lucky Nannan… medicine… pain relief… first.”
Everyone: “…”
After swallowing the potion, a warm current quickly spread through his body. The pain in his bones and limbs eased, and the pallor on Xue Qinglian’s face faded slightly. Looking at the people waiting for him to speak, he got straight to the point. “There’s no cure.”
Qian Wanjin immediately started looking around, clearly trying to find a weapon to end that infuriating man on the bed.
“If he lives, I live. If I die, he still lives.” After a pause, Xue Qinglian closed his eyes somewhat dejectedly. “Once the Gu is planted, it can’t be removed. I never even knew he could use Gu techniques.”
“So you’re saying, if we torture him, you’ll feel the same pain. But as long as he doesn’t die, neither will you,” Feng Qingbai said, staring at him.
“Not necessarily. If I can’t bear it, I might die first.”
Qian Wanjin lost it again. “So what, we can’t even touch Xue Zhong now? Not only do we have to keep him alive. We have to keep the bastard healthy and long-lived?! Damn it, I’m going to cough up blood just thinking about it!”
“Then why don’t you just finish me off with one stab?” Xue Qinglian glanced at him sideways. “I can’t do it myself.”
“Bite your own tongue!”
“I’m afraid of pain.”
Qian Wanjin was so angry he was gasping for breath. Only then did Xue Qinglian turn serious. “Tell him I’m dead. With no leverage, maybe you’ll be able to squeeze something useful out of him. At the very least, find the hidden agents he’s placed and eliminate any future threats.”
“Xue Zhong is a cunning old fox. You really think he’ll believe us just because we say so?” Qian Wanjin retorted.
“Then we’ll find a way to make him believe it,” Feng Qingbai said after a moment, lifting his gaze. “Only by severing his hope and making him think he’s lost his leverage can we break free from his control. At the same time, I’ll have people search for a way to break the Gu.”
He slowly looked around at everyone. “There’s nothing in this world that can’t be undone. Saying it’s incurable only means we’re ignorant.”
Those words struck a chord with everyone.
It was true. They had simply assumed there was no cure, but maybe that was just because they didn’t know enough to find one.
With some things, the danger wasn’t in not finding a solution, it was in giving up before you even tried.
After thinking for a moment, Liu Yusheng said, “Getting Xue Zhong to believe Qinglian is dead isn’t impossible. I can try.”
“How?”
“By using mafeisan (herbal anesthetic). We numb Qinglian’s senses, and when you deal with Xue Zhong while he feels nothing, he’ll see that you’re acting without restraint. He’ll grow suspicious, and once he starts doubting, he’s already halfway to believing. Besides, we’ll need to anesthetize Qinglian for the surgery anyway.”
Feng Qingbai nodded. “I’ll head to the prison again this afternoon and run the test.”
They’d know whether the Life Link Gu’s pain connection could be bypassed with mafeisan by torturing Xue Zhong again and seeing if Qinglian felt anything.
Hearing the conversation, Qian Wanjin’s eyes lit up. He cracked his knuckles. “I’m not going home tonight. I’m staying right here and waiting!”
Beating Xue Zhong up—unless he saw it with his own eyes—was the only way Qian Wanjin could ease the stifling anger in his chest.
On the bed, Xue Qinglian closed his eyes, seemingly exhausted to the point of falling asleep. The bitterness in his heart was completely hidden beneath his calm expression.
He had never imagined that one day, he and his uncle would end up like this. Two people who had once depended on each other for survival had turned into bitter enemies overnight.
Thinking about it; it was truly ironic.
Looking back, he couldn’t even be sure if his uncle had ever treated him sincerely, not even for a single moment. Or perhaps from the very beginning, all he had ever been was a tool.
The Bone-Shattering Poison, the Life Link Gu—his uncle had shown no mercy in using them.
And yet, laughably, back in that little courtyard, when he saw Feng Qingbai chasing after them, he had still been thinking about how to help his uncle escape.
But the person he’d wanted to protect had only ever seen him as a bargaining chip.
