Chapter 925: Make Qinglian Wish He Were Dead
With just one glance, his vision blurred from the cold sweat falling past his eyes.
He heard his uncle laughing.
Xue Qinglian curled up on the ground in pain, using every ounce of his strength to suppress the howl threatening to escape his throat.
His pride would not allow it.
The next moment, someone lifted him up and stuffed a soft handkerchief into his mouth—to keep him from biting off his tongue while enduring the pain.
He wanted to laugh, wanted to say that it was rare to receive such care from the Prince—even if it was under these circumstances. Unfortunately, he couldn’t speak.
It hurt too much.
Even just before losing consciousness, Xue Qinglian was still thinking: if he had said that out loud, Feng Qingbai would probably say, “Shut up.”
That guy…
Holding up Xue Qinglian with one hand, Feng Qingbai looked coldly at Xue Zhong. “Take him down.”
“Take me down? Your Highness should be treating me with due respect,” Xue Zhong said with a chuckle, shaking his head. “If something happens to me, I’m afraid Xue Qinglian won’t be any better off either. Judging by how deeply affectionate and loyal you seem to be toward your friends—even if you’re just pretending—you should carry on with the act to the end. Otherwise, wouldn’t that damage your noble image of loyalty and righteousness?”
As he spoke, he patted the armrest. “Still, I wouldn’t mind visiting the prince’s residence and being a guest of honor for once. What do you think, Your Highness?”
Feng Qingbai let out a mocking laugh. “Throw him into the Imperial Clan Court Prison. Without my explicit order, no one is allowed to visit!”
Xue Zhong’s expression changed instantly, and the look he cast at Feng Qingbai turned exceedingly cold and sinister.
The courtyard quickly returned to calm. The figures dispersed, and only the dim glow from the lamp in the side room remained, flickering and casting a faint light over its surroundings.
At the King’s Manor, Liu Yusheng was still groggy when she was awakened. “Have Badou and Hongdou woken up?”
“Shengsheng, get up first. Xue Qinglian was poisoned by Xue Zhong. He’s already passed out from the pain.” The man gently helped her dress while explaining in a quiet voice.
Liu Yusheng immediately sobered up. “Xue Zhong?” So he really had snuck into the capital?
“I’ll explain more later.”
Knowing the situation had to be serious, Liu Yusheng didn’t ask further questions. She quickly dressed and rushed toward Liuyun Pavilion.
Because she often had to get up at night to nurse the two babies, Feng Qingbai was always considerate. He would never wake her unless it was absolutely necessary.
Which meant Xue Qinglian’s condition must be truly dire.
When she reached Liuyun Pavilion, she saw the man lying on the bed. His entire body was drenched in sweat, his clothes clinging to his skin.
He was still unconscious, yet even so, his face was twisted in agony. Beads of sweat, as large as peas, dotted his forehead and rolled down continuously.
If not for the handkerchief stuffed in his mouth, he might have bitten through his own lips and tongue in unconscious agony.
Liu Yusheng’s expression turned grim. She immediately reached out to take his pulse, but the moment her fingers touched his wrist, her face changed dramatically.
“How is he?” Feng Qingbai asked, his brows furrowing.
“His… meridians are rupturing, and his bones are deteriorating at an alarming rate.” Shock filled Liu Yusheng’s eyes, and even her voice trembled.
Poison… How could such a terrifying and vicious poison exist in this world, one that could cause a person’s meridians to rupture on their own?!
Hearing her words, Feng Qingbai’s lips pressed into a tight line. “Can he be saved?”
“I don’t know,” Liu Yusheng replied, shaking her head with a pale face. “I’ve never encountered something like this before. I can’t say for sure. I can only try my best.”
With all his meridians severed, treatment would first require stitching them back together and using spiritual spring water to restore them. This meant she would have to operate on his entire body.
And his bones were corroding rapidly. Even with the spiritual spring, she couldn’t guarantee a full recovery.
Xue Zhong was too ruthless. He wanted Xue Qinglian to live a life worse than death. But Xue Qinglian was his own nephew, raised by his hand. What exactly was he trying to do?
“I need to detoxify him first. Only after the poison is cleared can I begin to repair his meridians and bones.”
The situation was dire, and even a moment’s delay would mean more suffering for Xue Qinglian and worsening of his injuries.
“Tell me what happened. How did Qinglian get poisoned?”
Xue Qinglian could be considered a master of poisons. If someone had poisoned him, there was no way he wouldn’t have noticed—even if that person was his uncle.
She suspected that Qinglian had taken the poison willingly.
While waiting for Feng Qingbai to explain, Liu Yusheng first fed some spiritual spring water to the unconscious man to help ease his pain. Her heart felt as heavy as if a stone had sunk into it. She couldn’t relax at all.
“We knew Xue Zhong had entered the capital long ago, but we couldn’t find out where he was hiding in such a short time. So I had someone secretly keep an eye on Xue Qinglian.”
Liu Yusheng nodded. “If Xue Zhong entered the capital, he would definitely try to contact Xue Qinglian.”
“Late at night, I learned that Xue Qinglian had quietly left the residence, so I followed him,” Feng Qingbai said, his expression darkening. Anger was evident in his eyes.
That anger was directed at Xue Qinglian. He knew he would be poisoned, yet he still drank that cup of tea.
Did he really think that voluntarily being poisoned would clear things between him and Xue Zhong?
Dream on.
Someone like Xue Zhong would never let him go.
Did he intend to repay Xue Zhong’s years of raising him with his life?
He was usually so clever, but who would’ve thought he could be so foolish?
Feng Qingbai didn’t continue, but Liu Yusheng could already guess the rest. “If I’m going to heal him, it will take a long time. I might not be able to take care of Badou and Hongdou during this period.”
She couldn’t possibly juggle child care and months of intensive surgery at the same time.
“Let’s have the two little ones stay with the Empress Dowager,” Feng Qingbai said directly.
It was the only viable option. The Empress Dowager adored the twins and had experience caring for children.
And the amount of time he could spend caring for them wouldn’t be any more than Shengsheng’s.
Liu Yusheng was silent for a moment, then nodded. “The children should be safe in the palace with the Empress Dowager. But what about Shan Lai?”
“I won’t give her a single chance to cause trouble!” Feng Qingbai narrowed his eyes, a cold glint flashing within them.
With the decision made, Liu Yusheng returned to Yuqing Courtyard and waited for the twins to wake up so she could feed them first.
After feeding them, she looked into the two pairs of eyes as dark and glossy as black jade, and spoke gently,
“Badou, Hongdou, Mama won’t be able to stay with you for a while. I need to go help Uncle Qinglian detoxify and heal. Your father and I are entrusting you to your Royal Grandmother for now. You must be good in the palace and not cause trouble, alright?”
The twins blinked, their expressions dazed and innocent—quiet and well-behaved.
“Mama knows you understand. No throwing tantrums. Once I’ve healed Uncle Qinglian, I’ll come get you right away. Since you’re not saying anything, I’ll take that as a yes.”
“Yiya——”
“Aya—”
“Alright, since you’ve agreed, Mama will have Daddy take you to the palace right away.”
The two little ones: “……”
After kissing each of them on the cheek, Liu Yusheng handed the twins to Zisu and Chenxiang, who would carry them and accompany Feng Qingbai to the palace to deliver them to the Yangxin Hall.
The twins were now four months old and no longer needed to be breastfed constantly. They could start eating solid food. So being entrusted to someone else temporarily wouldn’t have too much impact.
But she couldn’t afford to delay any longer. The poison in Xue Qinglian’s body was one she had never encountered before, and with no antidote available, the only option was to rely on spiritual spring water to purge the toxins. Yet the amount of spring water left in her space was already running low.
She still needed to finalize a long-term treatment plan. Right now, she wished she could split time in two just to keep up.
