Chapter 857 – I Was Reborn into This Life, Feng Qingbai

Qian Wanjin glanced around, then picked up a small stone from the flowerbed at the entrance of the courtyard and nervously held it out to Liu Yusheng. “Lucky Nannan, can you turn this into gold?”

“……”

“You can’t?” Qian Wanjin tossed the stone away, still buzzing with excitement. “Then can you summon a gust of wind with a wave of your hand, and call down rain with another?”

Liu Yusheng’s face darkened. She was certain now: the man in front of her had officially lost it.

“That doesn’t work either? Then can you read faces to tell fortunes and ward off evil? Or maybe you can—ow!”

Xue Qinglian smacked him hard on the head from behind. “Can you act normal for once?!”

Was this guy trying to make sure everyone in the prince’s residence knew that Nannan was special?

“How am I not normal? This is normal!” Qian Wanjin gritted his teeth and growled.

When faced with someone who was practically a deity, not freaking out would be abnormal!

“Are you two done messing around yet? It’s dinner time!” Liu Yusheng scolded sharply, then turned and walked away, clearly annoyed.

What on earth had those two been researching in that room that ended with them asking if she could turn stones into gold, summon wind and rain, or divine fate from faces?

She wasn’t a goddess! Were they crazy?!

Qian Wanjin wanted to chase after her and say more, but Xue Qinglian clamped a hand over his mouth, nearly suffocating him.

As for Nannan’s secrets—they were becoming increasingly obvious and suspicious. However, he wasn’t in a rush. What he needed to know, he would eventually find out.

And besides, he didn’t necessarily want to uncover the secrets behind it all.

As friends, Nannan gave that medicine to him and Qian Wanjin because she trusted them. Naturally, they had to be worthy of that trust.

Feng Qingbai returned right at dinnertime. The four of them shared a meal, but the atmosphere at the table was strangely tense.

When he lifted his eyes and casually glanced at the seemingly nonchalant Xue Qinglian and the grinning-like-an-idiot Qian Wanjin, his gaze darkened slightly.

The four barely spoke during the meal. After coaxing the lady back to her room to rest, Feng Qingbai returned to the main hall.

There, both Xue Qinglian and Qian Wanjin were waiting.

Sometimes, the understanding between men required only a single glance.

After finishing the meal and leaving the table, he had signaled for them to stay.

The three of them moved to the side hall and dismissed the servants. Feng Qingbai commented calmly, “You noticed?”

“A prince is indeed a prince—sharp and perceptive.” Xue Qinglian dropped his usual stern demeanor and joked with a grin, “If I couldn’t figure out something that obvious, wouldn’t my title as Ghost Doctor be a complete joke?”

“Feng Qingbai, Lucky Nannan is actually a fairy, right?” Qian Wanjin chimed in immediately, eyes sparkling.

The other two shot him a look as if he were an idiot.

“Since you all know, keep it to yourselves and don’t spread it around,” Feng Qingbai paused, then looked up. “Otherwise, I’ll have you buried alive.”

His tone was flat and emotionless, his gaze deep and unfathomable, radiating a chilling aura that made people’s skin crawl.

Qian Wanjin hunched his shoulders and muttered, “Still scaring people with your words? Do we really seem that unreliable? If we were, would Lucky Nannan have given us something so valuable?”

After speaking, he leaned toward Feng Qingbai and lowered his voice. “Earlier, Xue Qinglian used a bit of mine. The bottle isn’t full anymore. Do you have any? Can you share some with me?”

“Come ask me when you’re in real danger and have used yours up.”

“You’re the one in danger! How could you curse me like that? This master will live a smooth and prosperous life with peace and good fortune!”

Cursing him with misfortune? Black-hearted Qingbai!

The three of them huddled together but didn’t say much. They simply shared a mutual understanding to keep a certain secret sealed tight.

This time, Xue Qinglian was the quickest to leave.

The moment he sensed Feng Qingbai looking at him, he made himself scarce.

He knew exactly what he wanted to ask—but he couldn’t say.

To speak would be to betray his uncle. He couldn’t do it.

So if Feng Qingbai wanted to know, he’d have to find out on his own.

When Feng Qingbai returned to the room, the woman was already leaning against the headboard waiting for him. She asked, “Did you send them off?”

“Mhm, they’re trustworthy,” he said softly as he helped her lie on her side.

If they weren’t trustworthy, he wouldn’t have kept them behind to give a warning—he would’ve simply silenced them permanently.

The lights went out, and the room fell into a quiet stillness. They could hear each other’s gentle breathing.

Liu Yusheng opened her eyes and looked up in the dimness. “Feng Qingbai, don’t you have anything you want to ask me?”

She knew where he went after sending her back to the room.

She also knew that he had long harbored suspicions about the potion, yet had never once questioned her.

“I’m curious about everything about you,” after a moment, his voice sounded softly in the quiet room, “because I want to understand all of you. I don’t ask, not because I don’t want to know, Shengsheng. I’m just waiting for you to be ready, to tell me on your own.”

Of course he wanted to ask. He just didn’t want to pressure her.

His love was so deep, he couldn’t bear to see her struggle even a little.

Liu Yusheng wrapped her arms around his waist and nestled closer into his embrace.

In her ears was the steady rhythm of his heartbeat; surrounding her was his calm, gentle presence. It all made her heart feel extraordinarily at peace.

In truth, she had been waiting too, waiting for him to ask.

But this man had handed over the right to choose.

If she spoke, he would listen. If she stayed silent, he would wait.

Truly foolish.

In the past, she might have hesitated to speak of those bizarre and unbelievable things.

But not anymore.

If even Feng Qingbai couldn’t be trusted in this world, then her entire life would have been in vain.

Taking a deep breath, Liu Yusheng began to speak. “Feng Qingbai, do you believe in ghosts and gods?”

“No.”

“I didn’t either, not before. But if ghosts and gods don’t exist, then there’s no way to explain the things that have happened to me.”

The man’s body subtly tensed at her words.

He knew—she was about to tell him her secret.

“Shengsheng, I don’t believe in ghosts or gods, but if it’s something you say, I’ll believe anything, even if it sounds absurd.”

She shifted upward slightly, resting her head in the crook of his shoulder, drawing closer to his presence. Only then did she find the courage to continue.

“I was reincarnated, Feng Qingbai.”

Feng Qingbai’s breath caught. In the darkness, his gaze burned as he stared into her eyes. “What do you mean?”

“I died once. This life is my rebirth. I retained the memories of my past life even while still in the womb.” She paused before going on. “When I was little, I was afraid of scaring my family, so I tried hard to hide it. Later, when I met you and Aunt Rong, the things you taught me—I actually already knew.”

After that, she stopped speaking, giving him time to process.

After a long moment, his slightly hoarse voice broke the silence. “So, you forgot to drink Meng Po soup before reincarnating?”

Pfft! She burst out laughing. “I don’t know if that soup really exists, but whatever it was, I definitely didn’t drink it. My memories never disappeared, even from inside the womb.”

His arm around her tightened unconsciously. “Then… in your past life, were you also a doctor?”

“Yes.”

Feng Qingbai closed his eyes.

No wonder—no wonder Shengsheng possessed such exceptional medical skills. The ‘surgeries’ she performed on Chang Kai and Duan Ting were unlike anything he’d ever seen in this world. Not even rumors of such techniques existed.

Back then, he’d already begun to harbor suspicions, but he had kept them buried deep.

TL Note: Confession finally. Now, no more secrets!!
