Chapter 777 – I Only Treat Illnesses, Everything Else Has Nothing to Do with Me
Wei Lan and Wei Hong’s departure went unnoticed by Liu Yusheng.
On ordinary days, if nothing urgent happened, the shadow guards wouldn’t appear in public.
Since marrying Feng Qingbai and entering the King’s Manor, Liu Yusheng had lived seven days of peaceful life. After that, things gradually became busy.
Every day, people sent invitations, asking her to attend various tea parties and banquets.
Looking at the thick stack of invitation cards brought over by Steward Ding, Liu Yusheng felt a headache coming on.
“This one is from Minister Hong’s daughter, this one from Elder Mo’s granddaughter, and this one…”
Steward Ding dutifully recited them aloud while the princess consort was overwhelmed by the sheer volume.
“Uncle Ding, do these noble ladies have nothing else to do? Why are there gatherings every single day?” Liu Yusheng rubbed her forehead. Just hearing that string of names made her brain ache.
With hands folded in front of him, Steward Ding said with a faint smile in his eyes, “Your Highness, normally, the social gatherings in this circle aren’t so frequent. It’s all because Prime Minister Zuo fell from power, and his position remains vacant. Everyone is trying to climb up.”
“So now they’re setting their sights on me?”
“All officials chosen for promotion ultimately must pass before the Prince’s eyes. Only if he nods will the Emperor approve.”
So, in other words, they were trying to win her favor in hopes she’d give Feng Qingbai some pillow talk.
Rubbing her temples, Liu Yusheng muttered, “Everyone really knows how to curry favor.”
“The ones who know how to curry favor are the people behind these young ladies. They’re just following orders. If Your Highness doesn’t like these gatherings, you can simply refuse.”
“Won’t that cause trouble for Feng Qingbai?”
“His Highness rarely participates in such social events.”
“Mm, husband and wife are of one mind. In that case, I won’t go.”
Steward Ding’s mouth twitched slightly. Her Highness’s reasoning was quite solid. In the end, it’s all about putting the blame on the prince.
With that troubling matter resolved, Liu Yusheng tidied up a bit and prepared to head out.
“Your Highness, are you going out?”
“I promised to treat someone before. Since I have time today, I’ll go take a look.” After explaining a few things to Steward Ding, Liu Yusheng left the house.
It had been several days since her last outing, and if she didn’t check on them soon, the master and servant would probably think she had gone back on her word.
Dahuai Lane was located in the eastern part of the city, in the poor district.
Most of the homes there had already been abandoned, uninhabited for a long time. Over time, they had become a haven for wandering beggars in the capital.
The richly dressed woman walked slowly through the area, looking completely out of place amidst the surroundings.
Along the way, in the corners of walls and in front of dilapidated house gates, there were beggars either squatting or sitting.
When they saw the wealthy woman approaching, their eyes gleamed with a cold light, watching her closely, sizing her up, and giving off an ill-intentioned vibe.
“Madam, we should leave. We can have someone call for us later, it’s the same,” the maid said, feeling uneasy.
“It’s fine, we’re already here, let’s go in and have a look,” Liu Yusheng smiled.
The people watching weren’t truly malicious; it was just that life had forced them into certain habits.
The house at the end of the lane was similar to the ones before—its walls were weathered, and the yard was in ruins, with no sign of any living activity.
Pushing open the half-closed gate, she stepped into the yard, and that was when she finally heard a bit of movement.
Soon, someone ran out. When he saw Liu Yusheng, his eyes lit up.
It was the middle-aged man.
“My Lady, you’ve come! Please, come in! The place is old and shabby, I hope you can forgive us!” He said, then called inside, “Young Master, Her Ladyship is here!”
The young man already knew. He stood at the entrance of the living room, where one door was missing, and gazed steadily at Liu Yusheng.
After the day he sought treatment, they hadn’t seen her leave the house for several days. They almost thought she wouldn’t come back.
“There’s no need for formalities,” Liu Yusheng said as she reached the entrance of the hall, meeting the boy’s gaze. She stopped the middle-aged man from making any further greetings.
There was nothing here to offer as hospitality.
There wasn’t even a single fully intact chair.
The middle-aged man’s face showed an awkward expression.
“Don’t worry about formalities,” Liu Yusheng smiled, easing the man’s embarrassment. She then gently pulled the boy out of the room a little, as the room was too dark for her to properly diagnose.
The moment her hand brushed against the boy’s sleeve, he seemed to stiffen slightly. His hand instinctively tried to pull back but then forcibly stopped himself, allowing the woman to hold onto his sleeve.
After checking his pulse, Liu Yusheng asked the young man to open his mouth so she could inspect his tongue and throat for any signs of injury.
“My Lady, what do you think?” The middle-aged man stood by, looking anxious.
“You previously said he became mute because of eating the wrong food. Do you know what he ate?” Liu Yusheng asked.
The middle-aged man exchanged a glance with the young man, frowned, and shook his head. “We don’t know what he ate, but our Young Master definitely ate something wrong, and after that, he suddenly couldn’t speak anymore. We’ve consulted other doctors and tried many medicines, but there was no improvement.”
It was for the sake of curing the Young Master’s illness that they had spent all the money they had, and in the end, they had to resort to stealing buns that cost only two coins each when they were starving.
“He had a throat burn previously, which caused his vocal cords to atrophy and developed scar tissue. Then, after eating something wrong, it caused a secondary injury.” Liu Yusheng observed the two of them, her gaze calm and steady. She ignored their sudden change in expression and the wary look in their eyes. “I am a doctor. You came to me for treatment, so I will only focus on curing the illness. Anything else is not my concern. However, for the sake of the patient, I hope you can be honest and tell me the truth, without hiding anything, so that I can come up with the most suitable treatment plan.”
At this point, the two of them looked at Liu Yusheng with a changed expression. After a long silence, the middle-aged man finally spoke, “My Lady, is there still hope for my Young Master’s voice?”
“I don’t know. I will do my best.”
Even the best medical skills are not omnipotent. Liu Yusheng would never make a promise based on her abilities alone.
That would be irresponsible and go against her medical ethics.
Seeing the solemn expressions of the two, Liu Yusheng didn’t say anything more. “I will go back to prepare the treatment plan. I will return in three days.”
“My Lady, please take care.”
After watching Liu Yusheng leave, the middle-aged man and the young man stood at the entrance of the hall, neither of them moving for a while.
“The title of Divine Doctor is indeed not ordinary,” After a long time, the middle-aged man sighed. “Young Master, she is our only hope now. Please make a decision soon. If we fail this time, even if we can return someday, it will be of no use.”
The young man lowered his eyes, lost in thought, his gaze deep and flickering.
Once they had left the alley, free from the unnerving stares of the beggars, the maid couldn’t hold back her words. “My Lady, you’re amazing! You could tell just by looking that the man’s throat had been injured.”
“It’s not that impressive; it’s just that every profession has its own area of expertise,” Liu Yusheng smiled, her expression calm.
“Still, how could a perfectly healthy person get his throat burned? That’s really careless. Not only was there a burn, but then he ate the wrong thing, adding insult to injury, and turned himself into a mute.”
Having served the Princess Consort for a few days, the maid was familiar with her gentle nature and how she never scolded or punished the servants, so she felt more at ease speaking freely.
“Yes, adding insult to injury. But it’s not that surprising. In the backyards of those wealthy families, aren’t there usually even more secrets?”
“Do you think those two came from a noble family?”
