Chapter 766: Do you want it like this?
Liu Yusheng raised her hand to take the wine cup, clinking it with the man’s, and took a small sip.
It was strong, and just one sip was enough to make her slightly tipsy.
Once the ceremonial wine was finished, the ritual between them was basically complete.
Their gazes met, and in their slight drunkenness, a layer of charming haze covered their faces.
The red curtains fell, blocking out the light that had been coming from outside.
Meanwhile, at the Liu family courtyard, the elder members had just sent off the last group of guests who had drunk themselves into a stupor.
The courtyard was in disarray, with crooked chairs scattered around, tables piled high with leftovers, no longer neat as they had been when set up earlier.
The villagers had automatically stepped in to help, tidying up, washing dishes, and moving the tables and stools. If they left it for the Liu family to clean up, they feared it would take until midnight to finish.
Even with so many help, the work didn’t end until the moon was high in the sky.
Their beloved daughter had gotten married.
Though they knew she would come back, they couldn’t help but feel sad. The two elders had gone to bed early, needing time to adjust to the absence of their granddaughter.
Dalin and Erlin had drunk themselves into a stupor and were dragged back to their rooms by their wives.
The younger generation remained seated around the table, continuing the celebration.
“That guy, Feng Qingbai, will definitely stay at the manor tonight. Tomorrow morning, Xiao Shi and I will head over there. Who knows, we might catch a ride with him, and we can also send off our dear Nannan,” Qian Wanjin said, patting his round belly, smacking his lips.
“Don’t worry, you won’t catch a ride. If you want to return to the capital, find a boat yourself,” Liu Zhiqiu said with a mischievous smile, giving some advice to the man, “Feng Qingbai just married Nannan. Do you think he’ll let you tag along and be a third wheel?”
Qian Wanjin’s face twitched, and he immediately dropped the idea of catching a ride.
Zhiqiu was right. Feng Qingbai was exactly that kind of person, petty and small-minded.
It was his wedding night—how could anyone expect to be allowed to stand in the way?
If he really tried to tag along, Qian Wanjin guessed that Feng Qingbai would probably toss him into the river to feed the fish.
“It’s getting late. Let’s all wash up and head to bed. Tomorrow I need to get back to Yunzhou for duty,” Liu Zhixia said as he picked up his young son and took his wife’s hand, preparing to leave for the inner courtyard.
He was married and didn’t need to be here with these single folks, talking in such a sour way.
It was indeed getting late. By this time, everyone would usually be asleep.
Shi Xianrou stood up and pulled the man who still wanted to lounge around. “Let’s go, get some rest. Tomorrow morning, I’ll take you to catch a ride.”
“I’m not going. Feng Qingbai will throw me into the river!” The man pouted, refusing to move.
“Then we’ll just take a boat ourselves,” she said, leaning in close and winking at him. “Isn’t it more comfortable with just the two of us?”
“…” Qian Wanjin’s already flushed, slightly drunk face turned visibly redder. He sprang up like a carp leaping from water and strode off toward the inner courtyard. “Time to sleep, time to sleep! I’m heading back to the capital tomorrow!”
Liu Zhiqiu watched the man putting on airs and rolled his eyes. “What a hypocrite. One look and I can tell his mind’s in the gutter, and he’s still trying to act all proper.”
He turned his head—only to meet Little White Lotus’s slightly pouting face.
Backing his head up slightly, Liu Zhiqiu frowned. “What’s wrong?”
Liu Muqiu stared at him for a long moment. Seeing that he still looked completely clueless, she finally huffed and got up in a rare moment of anger. “You’re so dense! Blockhead!”
“…” What the hell? What did I do? How did I offend her?
How was he a blockhead?
How was he ‘dense’ and ‘unromantic’?
“Little White Lotus, you stop right there and explain yourself!”
“No!” came her sulking voice.
Liu Zhiqiu rubbed his face and sighed, then stood up to chase after her.
Just as the girl was about to step into the inner courtyard, he grabbed her and pulled her back. With a turn of his hand, he pinned her against the courtyard wall, lowering his head to meet her gaze. “What are you suddenly angry about? You’re being completely unreasonable.”
The girl bit her lip and lowered her gaze, clearly still sulking.
Under the faint moonlight, he could see a thin layer of moisture gathering on her trembling lashes.
She was genuinely feeling wronged.
Bracing his hands on either side of her, he held that posture and stared at her in silence for a while.
Until the moisture on her lashes formed into tiny droplets, Liu Zhiqiu finally reached out and gently pinched her delicate chin, lifting it. “Were you hoping I’d do this?”
Then he lowered his head and pressed his lips to hers.
Liu Muqiu’s eyes flew open wide, and her breath caught.
The warmth of his lips made her heart skip a beat.
They were so close—close enough that she could clearly feel his breath brushing against her face, and he still carried a faint scent of wine.
“Close your eyes. Breathe.”
She immediately squeezed her eyes shut, hands clenched into fists at her sides. Just as she felt like she might suffocate, she slowly let her breath out through her nose. Afraid that her breath might touch his skin and displease him, she carefully exhaled bit by bit, holding back even her breathing.
What she didn’t see was the rare softness that appeared in the man’s dark eyes at her response.
“Still angry?” He leaned back a little, gazing at her with deep, unreadable eyes, and asked again.
“…Not anymore,” she replied softly, her lashes trembling.
The man suddenly let out a low laugh and leaned close to her ear, whispering, “Little White Lotus, only a cat in heat gets this moody.”
“…” Like a cat showing its claws, she scratched him hard on the chest and shoved him away before fleeing toward the inner courtyard.
He was the one who didn’t understand romance—how dare he say she was in heat!
Behind her, his delighted laughter echoed like a spell. Even after she fled into her room and shut the door, the sound still lingered in her ears.
With her back against the door, she pressed her burning cheeks with both hands. Moments later, she began to jump around the room, laughing to herself.
