Chapter 754: Find a Female Doctor
The second day of February.
His Imperial Uncle was getting married, and the bride was Aunt Liu.
Both of them were the two most important people in his heart.
He lowered his gaze, looking at the completed congratulatory imperial decree in front of him, where the list of rewards took up most of the space.
Half of those rewards consisted of rare and precious medicinal materials.
Those were all things Aunt Liu liked.
Aunt Liu was a healer. She didn’t care for cosmetics or gold and silver, but she had a special fondness for all sorts of rare and unusual herbs.
He only realized this after meeting her.
The rare medicinal materials collected by his uncle from the imperial treasury, which even the Imperial Medical Academy couldn’t touch, were actually all meant for Aunt Liu.
It was also from that time that he started secretly developing an interest in medicinal herbs.
Like a little hamster hoarding food, he collected and hid them little by little.
Even his uncle didn’t know about it.
He often imagined that when Aunt Liu saw these herbs, her delicate face would light up with a delighted smile, and her shining black eyes would gleam even more brilliantly.
But he never expected that when he sent these things, it would be like this.
To congratulate her on her wedding.
“In this world, there is only one Aunt Liu…”
A fleeting hint of self-mockery crossed his eyes. He rolled up the imperial decree and placed it aside, then stood up and walked out of the imperial study.
Behind him, a newly promoted young eunuch hurriedly followed. “Your Majesty, shall we return to the palace to rest?”
“Return to the palace? Do you think, in your eyes, all I do is handle state affairs and then eat and sleep?”
The young eunuch lowered his head and dared not speak. In fact, wasn’t that really the case?
After finishing his duties, the emperor would eat and sleep, wake up, eat again, and then rush through his pile of state affairs in the imperial study.
If the King were at court, the emperor wouldn’t dare to be so perfunctory. He could only bully this little eunuch who wouldn’t dare to argue.
With his hands behind his back, he slowly walked through the vast imperial palace.
Every eunuch, palace maid, and even the imperial guards he encountered along the way would step aside and bow respectfully.
Before Zuo Xiang’s fall, he would never have encountered such treatment. The imperial guards were more formidable than him, acting as if they were the true masters of the palace, never putting this emperor in their eyes.
So, when Dong Jie died and was beheaded by his Imperial Uncle with a single sword strike, it was a great joy to the emperor.
It was only because of his uncle that he had his position today.
After walking around in circles, he unknowingly arrived at the imperial garden, sitting down by the pavilion by the Mirror Lake.
Feng Mohan remained silent, gazing at the thick layer of ice on the lake’s surface, with the cold wind rushing in.
In a short while, his cheeks were flushed from the cold wind, even his eyes reddened.
“Your Majesty, the wind here is too strong, it’s very cold. Why not return to the palace? If you sit here too long, it’ll harm your royal health.”
“What royal health? If I get sick, I’m just like an ordinary person,” Feng Mohan scoffed coldly, “Does the royal body have nine lives?”
“……”
“I’m sick! Get the imperial physician to come and diagnose me!”
“……” The young eunuch was dumbfounded. What is the emperor thinking? What illness? He looks fine!
“Why are you still standing there? Hurry up!”
“Yes, Your Majesty, I’ll go right away!”
“Wait, not the imperial physician. See if there’s a female doctor on duty. Send one over. She should be about eighteen or nineteen, with big, round eyes that turn into crescent moons when she smiles. She should speak softly, with a gentle tone, neither flattering nor reserved, someone who can treat me like an ordinary person…”
The young emperor’s requests came one after another. The eunuch started counting on his fingers, losing track with ten fingers.
And the more he listened to those descriptions, the more they seemed to resemble someone. For a moment, the young eunuch couldn’t quite figure out who it was.
He just felt that this person was someone he had seen before.
“What are you still waiting for? Go quickly!”
“Yes, yes! I’ll go right now!”
At the sound of the shout, the young eunuch quickly ran off.
Feng Mohan continued to stare at the mirror-like surface of the lake, and suddenly, he grinned. “What an idiot, damn it.”
He stood up and left.
By the time the young eunuch hurriedly brought a female doctor to the pavilion, it was already empty.
Back in the palace, Feng Mohan collapsed onto the dragon bed.
The room had a brazier constantly burning, so as soon as he entered, it felt warm and cozy, with the air carrying a gentle warmth.
Sniffing the air, Feng Mohan felt uncomfortable all over, his head heavy. He cursed under his breath and propped himself up to sit, “So this royal body… is really delicate and fragile.”
Just sitting in the pavilion for such a short time had already left him shivering from the cold.
If it had been his Imperial Uncle, he could have sat there for half the day.
“Someone there!” No one responded. Feng Mohan, frustrated, slammed his fist on the bed’s headboard and yelled, “Someone there! Where is everyone? Did they all die?!”
“We’re here, Your Majesty! How did you come back by yourself? I brought the female doctor! She’ll take a look at you right away!” The young eunuch’s out-of-breath voice sounded from outside, followed by hurried footsteps.
Feng Mohan looked up and saw the person approaching. In addition to the young eunuch, there was a female doctor around eighteen or nineteen years old, carrying a small medicine box. She was also out of breath, and because she had run too quickly, her bangs were slightly disheveled, and her jade-white face was flushed from the exertion.
Her eyebrows were like willows, and her almond-shaped eyes—she truly matched the description he had given.
Feng Mohan couldn’t help but laugh.
He had really lost his mind. The eunuch didn’t even catch on and actually brought the person over.
The female doctor, without bothering to wipe the sweat on her forehead, stepped forward and set down her medicine box. “Your Majesty, let me check your pulse. Looking at Your Majesty’s complexion, it seems you might have caught a chill.”
“Go ahead,” Feng Mohan said, pulling up his bright yellow sleeve, extending his wrist, leaning back, and closing his eyes, allowing her to examine him.
Her hand, soft and gentle, brushed over his wrist, her movements delicate, bringing a slight tingling sensation to his skin.
Without thinking, Feng Mohan opened his eyes and looked at the female doctor again.
From this angle, he could see her long eyelashes, delicate like a feather fan, then the tip of her slightly upturned nose, and further down, her softly pursed pink lips.
A gentle, calm aura radiated from her, reminding him of someone—someone very similar.
“Is it a requirement for all female doctors to look like you?” the young man suddenly asked.
The female doctor froze for a moment, then withdrew her hand from his wrist and began to prepare a prescription. “Your Majesty, it seems that you were suddenly exposed to a cold wind, which caused your body to catch a chill. A couple of doses of medicine should fix it. As for the appearance of female doctors, they vary. The only thing that is the same is the title.”
She spoke quite bluntly.
Feng Mohan narrowed his eyes. “What’s your name?”
“Your servant is called Shan Lai.”
“Shan Lai, with bright eyes and a graceful appearance. You truly live up to your name.”
“Thank you for your praise, Your Majesty,” Shan Lai said, handing the prescription to the eunuch. “Go to the Imperial Medical Academy and get the medicine. Once you return, make it and have His Majesty drink it. After resting for an hour, he will feel much better.”
After speaking, she stood up, slinging her medical box over her shoulder. “Your Majesty, I shall take my leave.”
“Mm.” Feng Mohan watched her leave, his gaze turning somewhat somber.
After leaving the Qiande Palace, Shan Lai stopped just around the corner of the grand hall where no one could see. She suddenly pressed her hands to her chest, closed her eyes, and gasped for breath. Her hands tightly pressed down, trying to calm the erratic beating of her heart.
It was fast and disordered.
Turning around, she glanced back at the palace. Once her heartbeat steadied, Shan Lai adjusted the strap of her medical box and continued walking away.
