Chapter 690: Who Did This? Are They Crazy?!

The man kept walking forward at a slow pace.

Liu Yusheng followed behind, constantly probing, trying to get more information out of him. Without realizing it, she had walked out of the small courtyard.

Right in front of her, she watched as the man pressed a certain spot on the wall ahead. The solid wall suddenly began to slide open, revealing a hidden passage.

Her face turned dark.

So…Yesterday, when she spent half the day running around outside, she never actually left the vicinity of this courtyard?!

The real exit was here all along.

From start to finish—she had been played!

“Heilian, do you always mess with people like this?” It was the same kind of rhetorical jab he had thrown at her before.

The man turned his head slightly, his calm, black eyes shifting toward her. “I never play tricks on people.”

Liu Yusheng blinked.

“I only kill them.”

“……”

Stepping out of the passage, the view suddenly opened up. To Liu Yusheng, this place looked like a village.

Rows of bamboo houses stood neatly in place, and in front of them, women and children could be seen chatting and laughing.

The narrow paths crisscrossed, their edges lined with unknown plants. The ones she could recognize were all medicinal herbs.

Some were even poisonous.

Yet the people walking along the paths remained unaffected by the toxic plants around them.

These villagers looked no different from ordinary rural folk—dressed in simple tunics and pants.

As they passed by, they greeted the man beside her with respect, their faces warm and smiling. They only glanced at Liu Yusheng briefly out of curiosity before looking away.

As they walked further in, she even saw street vendors lining the roadside. But instead of selling food, they were selling various medicinal pills and prepared herbs.

Liu Yusheng’s unease grew stronger with every step.

“Heilian, what is this place?”

She could sense that something was off.

Hidden mechanisms, medicinal herbs everywhere, and even the most ordinary-looking villagers seemed to possess the skills of an apothecary.

“My territory.”

A non-answer if she had ever heard one.

Liu Yusheng knew better than to keep asking.

The man seemed intent on giving her a tour of his territory. His footsteps covered nearly every corner of the area.

By the time the sky began to darken, he finally stopped in front of a bamboo house.

Without a word, he led Liu Yusheng up to the second floor and stopped outside a room. Then, he shoved her inside.

Caught off guard, Liu Yusheng’s heart jumped. She spun around and asked, “Why did you bring me here?”

Her unease and vigilance didn’t escape the man’s notice.

After a brief silence, he simply said, “Help.”

“Help with what?”

His response was a loud BANG—shutting the door in her face.

She nearly cursed out loud.

This guy was seriously insane!

Unpredictable, erratic, and downright impossible to read!

Meanwhile, the man paused outside the bamboo house. He stood still for a moment, his dark eyes flickering with a fleeting trace of confusion.

“Wu-wu—Wang!” A tiny white figure suddenly dashed out from the corner.

It stopped nearby, wagging its tail—Wanting to get closer, but too scared to. Its round, black eyes stared up at the man—innocent and bewildered.

The man glanced to the side, then walked over and picked up the little white puppy. After staring at it for a moment, he pinched its mouth shut with one hand and grabbed its front paws with the other. With a sharp, forceful twist—

Its leg bone snapped and pierced through the skin!

The gleaming white bone tore through the flesh, leaving a gruesome, bloody wound—viscerally disturbing!

The puppy struggled violently, its muffled barks full of pain and anguish.

The man coldly watched, unmoved.

Only after the puppy’s struggles began to weaken did he release his grip on its mouth, allowing it to emit a mournful, painful cry.

He then turned back to the second-floor room, opened the door, and handed over the tiny creature. “Cure it.”

Before the man had a chance to leave, Liu Yusheng immediately saw the puppy’s horrific condition.

Her brows furrowed and she pressed her lips tightly together.

Quickly, she took the puppy from his hands, inspecting its wounds. Her eyes flashed with anger.

“Who did this? Are they insane?!”

The wound wasn’t just a broken bone—the tendons were severed too!

And this injury was clearly intentional!

To inflict such harm on a small creature like this wasn’t just insane—it was pure madness!

The man paused for a moment before responding, “I don’t know.”

Then he asked, “Is it possible to heal it?”

“Give me a set of silver needles, hot water, a clean cloth, a splint, and some catgut,” Liu Yusheng commanded as she carefully cradled the puppy’s blood-soaked front leg, not even lifting her head.

The hot water was quickly brought to her—so fast, it seemed like it had been prepared in advance.

As for the items she requested, the man opened a small cabinet in the room and produced everything she needed.

Liu Yusheng immediately began to clean the puppy’s wound. When it was time to set the bone, she glanced at the man. “Come over and help. Hold it still, don’t let it move.”

The man seemed completely unfazed by her request. He stepped forward and held the puppy steady.

He then watched intently as she treated the wound—resetting the bone, stitching the severed tendons, applying medicine, and bandaging it.

He didn’t look away.

“So, it’s possible to reconnect severed tendons like this… Can it fully recover?”

“I don’t know. If it heals properly, it might.”

He looked at her deeply and then asked, “If it were a person, with all the tendons severed for over ten years, would there still be a chance of recovery?”

Liu Yusheng looked up, meeting his unwavering gaze. She didn’t know if he was just curious or if someone truly had suffered such a fate. After a moment, she shook her head, “No, it’s impossible.”

If the tendons have been severed for ten years, they have already atrophied and can never be reconnected. Even if she had spiritual spring water, it wouldn’t help.

Moreover, if all the tendons were severed and the body suffered such a severe injury, it meant the person wouldn’t survive. Even if they did, it wouldn’t be for long.

And during that period, the pain would be unbearable—perhaps worse than death itself.

There was no further conversation between them. After finishing with the puppy’s treatment, the man left. He didn’t restrain her, but he also didn’t bring her back to the previous small courtyard.

Since he had no intention of harming her, Liu Yusheng decided to settle in the bamboo house. She was at peace with the idea.

The little white puppy also stayed.

One person and one dog could still keep each other company.

Since Liu Yusheng treated the puppy’s injuries, the puppy seemed to have become especially dependent on her. Its wet, glistening eyes would occasionally glance at her, and it would make soft, puppy-like whimpers, “Wuwu—wuwu—”

At the moment, the puppy was secured in a small basket, unable to move around, lest its leg healing be in vain.

Squatting down to meet the puppy’s gaze, Liu Yusheng raised her hand and gently patted its small head. “Does it hurt a lot? You can’t come out yet. You need to let the bone heal first. Be patient for a few days, okay?”

The little puppy didn’t seem to fully understand, but it rubbed its little head against her hand and let out a soft whine.

Liu Yusheng listened carefully; there was no sound coming from outside the door, and she was alone in the room. She bit her lip slightly and casually placed her finger near the puppy’s mouth, allowing a few drops of liquid to seep from her fingers into its mouth. After gently scratching its chin, she retracted her hand nonchalantly.

The little puppy quickly fell asleep.

In the middle of the night, Liu Yusheng was disturbed by faint sounds of commotion coming from nearby.

“Doesn’t it tire you to keep watching me? Am I a criminal? Look into my eyes, huh? Am I a criminal?”

The familiar voice made Liu Yusheng’s entire body tense. She immediately opened the door and rushed outside.
