Chapter 688: Useless to Me
At this moment, the entire street was lit only by the flames, with no other sources of light. Everyone was scrambling to escape for their lives. The panic on display, along with the various ugly behaviors and the dark side of human nature revealed during the escape, was like a real-life drama unfolding before everyone’s eyes.
The person on the opposite rooftop watched indifferently, coldly observing everything happening below.
However, when his gaze landed on a particular figure, his pupils suddenly contracted sharply, and he shot down like a sharp arrow.
With a swift motion of their wide sleeves, the people around the woman were sent flying to either side.
Liu Yusheng almost thought she would be trampled to death, feeling sharp, bone-chilling pain from where she was stepped on. Her palms and knees burned with intense pain. When she noticed the unusual sensation around her, she tried to lift her head, but was suddenly pulled up with great force.
A strange scent, a strange feeling.
“Thank you…” She looked up but didn’t have time to see the person’s face clearly. She only saw a face illuminated by the firelight flashing briefly in her field of vision before her neck ached slightly, and everything fell into darkness.
The woman slumped softly into his arms. The man picked her up, glanced at the third-floor window, and then disappeared from the spot with her in his arms.
Meanwhile, Wei Hong was gathering the members of the Merchant Guild by the window, preparing to lead them down.
Glancing down, all she saw was the last trace of the man’s shadow merging into the darkness of the night.
Liu Yusheng was already nowhere to be found below the inn.
When Liu Yusheng woke up again, the sky was already light. She slowly opened her eyes, and her gaze landed on a sky-blue tent ceiling. She looked around; the furnishings were simple yet elegant, in a very unfamiliar environment.
She rubbed her neck, propped herself up, and suddenly heard a voice by her ear, “You’re awake.”
Liu Yusheng was startled, her hairs standing on end, quickly turning her head to look toward the source of the voice. She then noticed a figure standing against the wall in the shadow at the opposite corner of the bed.
If he hadn’t spoken, she wouldn’t have noticed his presence at all!
“Who are you?” Liu Yusheng asked warily, pressing her lips together.
The man stepped out from the shadow, taking three steps. With each step, Liu Yusheng felt an immense pressure, and the closer he got, the heavier the pressure became.
As he stepped closer, Liu Yusheng finally saw his face clearly.
Dressed in black, with a mask covering his face, only his deep, inscrutable eyes were visible.
“Did you capture me?” Liu Yusheng subconsciously gripped the bed sheets beneath her.
“I saved you.”
“And you also knocked me out.”
Although the pain on her neck was subtle, it was enough to make her aware. She was fully conscious when she was pulled up, but the moment she looked up, he knocked her unconscious!
The man fell silent for a moment, clearly tacitly agreeing with her statement.
Unbelievable… he’s insane!
“Where is this? Why did you bring me here?”
“I saved you,” the man repeated.
“You captured me!”
“I saved you.”
His voice was deep and slightly hoarse, with a tone as flat as a straight line.
If she didn’t know he was emphasizing his point, Liu Yusheng would have thought he had a recorder in his mouth repeating himself.
This kind of conversation was enough to drive anyone insane!
Liu Yusheng got out of bed, her gaze fixed on the man as she carefully calculated the safest distance. She glanced toward the door, secretly planning her escape.
This was Beicang, and the man was a stranger. There was no way he would have taken her for no reason—there was certainly some ulterior motive behind it.
Fortunately, she had some special sedatives with her. If she could find the right opportunity to knock him out, she might be able to escape.
“Your sedatives don’t work on me.”
“…” Damn it! How did he know I was planning to use sedatives? “Did you search me?!”
“No.”
“What’s your goal in capturing me? What do you want in order to let me go?”
He took another step closer, his voice cold, “You can leave now.”
“……”
Liu Yusheng felt like a fool.
Her mind was racing, trying to figure out how to escape, yet the man simply said, “You can leave now.”
Her expression turned cold as she gritted her teeth. She truly started walking toward the door, her vigilance at its peak. The pressure from the man made her teeth chatter with unease.
She thought he would kick her back.
But he didn’t.
She walked all the way to the door without a hitch, opened it, and even stepped outside. There was no sound behind her.
No matter what his intentions were, at that moment, Liu Yusheng didn’t think about it. She didn’t even dare to glance back.
She ran as fast as she could!
The path was clear and unobstructed!
Damn you, you son of bitch!
Exhausted, Liu Yusheng panted heavily, wiping her face with force, and numbly turned back.
Behind her was a vast expanse of water.
This place was an isolated island.
She had spent half the day running to confirm that.
Returning to the small courtyard, the man was standing at the door, leaning against the wall, his face hidden behind a mask, making it impossible to discern his expression.
But Liu Yusheng was certain that he was mocking her.
Because she could see the mocking glint in his eyes!
Stopping not far from him, Liu Yusheng coldly looked at him and said, “Is this funny?”
“Very funny.” His tone was flat, like a straight line.
Liu Yusheng picked up a small stone from the ground and threw it at him.
Even a clay figure would have some fire left in it, let alone her. Being toyed with on purpose had made her anger flare up completely.
At this point, she could almost be certain that the man was not normal.
This was a twisted, pathological neurotic.
And most importantly, he wouldn’t want her dead.
So, she threw with abandon, not holding back at all.
When it was not the time to hold back, there was no need to!
The man easily caught the stone she threw and then tossed it back at her feet. “Throw again.”
Liu Yusheng felt despair.
She walked past the man, expressionless, and went back to her room, throwing herself onto the bed.
Why was she even arguing with a madman?
The things she said were incomprehensible to him.
Before long, footsteps came from outside the door, two pairs.
She looked up and saw the man walking in, followed by a maid.
Heh, so it turned out there were other living people on this isolated island besides the two of them.
The maid was carrying a tray, on which was a steaming, fragrant meal. She placed the food on the low table by the window, then immediately bowed and retreated.
“Eat.” The man said briefly, sitting on one side of the low table.
Liu Yusheng got out of bed and walked over, glancing at the mask on his face. She picked up her chopsticks and began eating.
It tasted delicious.
She was hungry, so of course, she ate. As for whether he had poisoned the food, she didn’t give it a second thought.
With the man’s martial arts skills, killing her would be a piece of cake; there was no need for such theatrics.
While eating, Liu Yusheng kept her gaze fixed on him, a faint trace of mockery in her eyes.
She was curious to see how he would eat.
The mask on his face didn’t have an opening.
It seemed like he knew what she was thinking. The man raised his hand, gripping the edge of the mask, and slowly pulled it off.
The movement made Liu Yusheng pause, her breath catching, her eyes locking onto him even more intently.
Since he dared to remove the mask, she would dare to see his true face!
When the mask was fully removed, Liu Yusheng almost dropped her chopsticks. “Your tastes are really something else. Under the mask, there’s another mask. Don’t you have any shame?”
The hard mask was removed, but underneath was a soft mask painted with a traditional Chinese opera face! The most important part was, it had a mouth opening!
