Chapter 656: Only Willing to Protect
Liu Muqiu was also nearby, but her focus was entirely different from the others. “Brother Zhiqiu, if he gets cured, how much do you think he’ll pay in consultation fees?”
Liu Zhiqiu’s mouth twitched. He was at a loss for words—something about the way this was developing felt… off.
Had he talked about debts so often that he had turned their little white lotus into a money-obsessed miser?
Was there still time to fix this?
“Prince Ting is a royal, so he must be rich. Once Nannan cures him, he’ll still need some time to recover. If I bring him tea and warm water every day and take good care of him, I might even earn a bit of silver.”
Liu Zhiqiu rubbed his forehead and decided to educate this little white lotus properly. “That’s too much work for too little money. Instead, why don’t you keep track of Nannan’s daily habits and little details I don’t know? Later, you can sell that information to Feng Qingbai. Even the lowest price would be at least a thousand taels. What’s the point of making just one or ten taels at a time? You’d be saving forever before you see any real fortune. Also, listen—I’ll teach you some easy ways to squeeze money out of Qian Wanjin…”
Liu Muqiu’s eyes lit up with excitement.
Without saying a word, Feng Qingbai stood up and left.
Right now, only Liu Zhiqiu and Liu Muqiu were home from the younger generation—but both of them had their eyes on his money.
And they were blatantly discussing in front of him how to extract silver from his pockets.
If he didn’t leave now, he might lose control and end up beating them to death.
Inside the clinic, Liu Yusheng had already administered anesthetic to Duan Ting and was preparing the sterilized surgical tools.
As Duan Ting stared in shock at the surgical instruments, Liu Yusheng calmly walked toward him.
Once his eyelids grew heavy and he began to drift into unconsciousness, she made the first incision.
Ancient medical conditions were far too primitive. To perform a bone graft and fusion, the necessary materials were incomplete.
She had no choice but to extract two pieces of ilium from Duan Ting’s own body and use them to fill the missing section of his spine, allowing the bones to fuse and grow together before securing them in place.
For her, this surgery was even more challenging than the craniotomy she had performed on Chang Kai.
It also required a significant amount of spiritual spring water.
Without it, forget bone regeneration—Duan Ting wouldn’t even survive the risk of infection.
Moreover, this time, she was the sole surgeon. There wasn’t even an assistant by her side. It was an immense challenge, draining both her energy and time.
The surgery began in the morning, and by the time she finally stepped out of the clinic, exhausted, it was already afternoon.
Nearly three hours had passed.
A surgery like this would take only two hours in the modern world.
A crowd had gathered outside the clinic.
The moment the door opened and the young woman emerged, Feng Qingbai immediately strode forward, scooped her into his arms, and carried her straight toward the inner courtyard.
Liu Yusheng quickly stopped him. “Feng Qingbai, wait, I still have instructions to give.”
At the door, aside from him, stood Duan Ting’s two maids, Liu Zhiqiu, Liu Muqiu, and two elders of the Liu family.
Once Feng Qingbai paused, Liu Yusheng carefully explained the post-surgery care and recovery details to the two maids. “…He won’t wake up for at least another two hours. During this time, don’t move him. I’m going to rest for a while. If anything happens, wait until I wake up.”
Without waiting for a response, Feng Qingbai resumed walking, carrying her straight into the inner courtyard.
Standing outside for three hours would tire anyone out, let alone performing surgery for that long. The exhaustion on her face was enough to make one’s heart ache.
The moment Liu Yusheng’s body touched the bed, she fell asleep. When she woke again, night had already fallen outside.
At some point, someone had lit a lamp in the room.
By her bedside, a man sat silently, keeping her company.
“Feng Qingbai, how long was I asleep?” She smiled at him.
Gently touching her cheek, Feng Qingbai replied in a soft voice, “Not even two hours. If you’re still tired, rest a bit longer. The patient in the clinic hasn’t woken up yet. If you fall back asleep, I’ll wake you when it’s time.”
Liu Yusheng shook her head and slowly sat up. “I’m fully awake now. I’ll go check on him. My family isn’t very familiar with post-surgery care, and I’d rather be there in case they have any questions.”
Feng Qingbai couldn’t stop her, so he could only accompany her to the clinic.
The girl had an unusual persistence in certain matters—this was her sense of responsibility as a physician.
At such times, she shone brighter than ever.
He had no desire to restrain her—only to protect her.
Upon entering the clinic, they found Duan Ting’s two maids sitting quietly beside him, waiting for their master to wake. Their bodies were tense, showing their unease. But when they saw Liu Yusheng enter, they visibly relaxed.
As maids, they were naturally responsible for caring for their master.
However, their master had just undergone surgery and had yet to regain consciousness. His wounds were wrapped in thick bandages, stained with seeping blood, making for a rather unsettling sight. They didn’t even dare to touch him, let alone properly attend to him.
“Miss Liu.” Both maids stood simultaneously and bowed to Liu Yusheng and Feng Qingbai.
Liu Yusheng waved a hand, gesturing for them to stay silent. Then she walked to the bed and placed her fingers on the patient’s wrist, checking his pulse to assess his post-surgical condition.
The moment her fingers touched his wrist, the man slowly woke up, his gaze settling silently on her.
He said nothing, waiting until she finished checking his pulse before speaking, “How is it?”
His voice was hoarse and weak.
A sharp pain radiated from his spine, making him frown. Yet, amidst the discomfort, a flicker of joy flashed in his eyes.
Before, that part of his body had been completely numb. But now—he could feel pain. Did this mean that sensation in his lower body was beginning to return?
“The effects of the anesthesia are starting to wear off,” Liu Yusheng said softly, her tone calm. “You will gradually begin to feel pain, and it will get worse. There’s no way to avoid it—just bear with it. If it becomes unbearable, call for me, and I’ll give you painkillers,” Liu Yusheng replied.
“When will I recover?” This was his most pressing concern.
“If there are no complications, your bones should fuse completely in about half a month. At that point, you’ll be able to sit up, but you won’t be able to move freely. If your nerves recover well, you should be able to walk in two or three months. However, to fully regain full mobility, it will take at least six months. Even then, you won’t be like a normal person—you’ll need to avoid any activities that might cause strain on your bones, to prevent any secondary injuries.”
“At least six months?” The mention of this caused Duan Ting to furrow his brows.
Liu Yusheng ignored his reaction and turned her attention to the two maids. “During the time when his bones are healing, don’t move him carelessly. Let him stay lying down for now. You need to be extra careful with his daily care. I’ll write a prescription for you. After you get the medicine, he needs to take two doses every day. Don’t miss a dose for the next half month.”
“Thank you, Miss Liu.” The two maids bowed again.
They had no objection to the six-month recovery time.
