Chapter 640: Fifty Thousand Taels May Not Be Enough

“Talk to me after you wake up.”

“You bastard! Are you not going to take responsibility for what you’ve done?”

“You want me to marry you?”

Qian Wanjin’s face twitched, “…Feng Qingbai, you have no shame!”

“Thanks for the compliment.”

“……”

Qian Wanjin turned to Liu Zhiqiu for help, but the man patted his shoulder. “Xiao Jinzi, I can’t help you. I still need Feng Qingbai to make money and pay off my debts.”

Seeing Qian Wanjin about to explode, Liu Zhiqiu quickly changed the subject, “Of course, if you pay a good reward, and give me more, we can negotiate.”

These two were not brothers at all. Qian Wanjin immediately flopped onto Feng Qingbai’s bed, determined to stay. Feng Qingbai couldn’t just throw him out, could he?

Feng Qingbai stepped forward, looking at the person who immediately shut his eyes and tightly gripped the headboard. He didn’t try to pull him off but instead reached for the teapot on the table and poured it onto the bed sheet.

“Feng Qingbai, what are you doing?” Qian Wanjin asked, dumbfounded.

Had he lost his mind? Was he pouring water on the bed to stop him from sleeping?

“Wei Hong, go get clean bed sheets from Grandma and tell her that Qian Wanjin peed himself on my bed.”

“Yes, Master!” Though her voice could be heard, her presence was absent. But one could easily guess where Wei Hong was headed—she always followed Feng Qingbai’s orders without question.

Qian Wanjin’s fingers trembled as he pointed at Feng Qingbai, and after a long pause, he let out an angry roar, “Feng Qingbai, to hell with you!”

Liu Zhiqiu sighed: Deserved it, didn’t he?

Feng Qingbai wouldn’t do anything to him, but he would make him question his life.

“Get off the bed, if you stay there any longer, you’re not just going to pee once, you’ll pee a second time, third time.”

Qian Wanjin climbed down, let out a yell, and rushed into the inner courtyard to complain to Shi Xianrou.

Having solved one problem, Feng Qingbai turned to Liu Zhiqiu, “What’s the matter?”

“Those people who chased us in Xuzhou, are they the same group from today?” Liu Zhiqiu stopped his carefree demeanor.

If he remembered correctly, those people had specifically assigned men to capture Nannan.

“Yes.”

“Will Nannan be in danger?”

Feng Qingbai pursed his lips and replied, “I can’t guarantee.”

When it came to Shengsheng, he didn’t dare take any chances.

Liu Zhiqiu cursed under his breath, wiping his face. If he had known he’d encounter such a situation, he should have started learning internal strength from Aunt Hong when he was young.

Now, if he truly encountered a master, what use would it be with only some basic skills?

“Before returning to the capital, I’ll set up defenses around Xinghua Village. That person’s main target is me, and once I return to the capital, he should leave with me.” After a brief pause, Feng Qingbai added, “August is when Qin Xiao returns to court and the Beicang envoys will visit. Since the other party chose this time to issue a challenge, I suspect he will stir up trouble and disrupt the situation in the capital.”

“Then you need to be even more careful when you return.” Compared to Xinghua Village, Feng Qingbai was in the most danger.

Liu Zhiqiu began to understand why his uncle had always opposed Nannan being with Feng Qingbai.

No one wanted their precious daughter to be constantly in danger.

After this incident, Feng Qingbai’s plans changed. Originally, he was supposed to stay for another two or three days, but now he had to leave earlier. He needed to return to the capital as soon as possible to prepare.

The departure was set for the day after the next day.

The elders of the Liu family were completely unaware of the accident in the county town. They simply thought that Feng Qingbai was busy with matters in the capital.

Seeing that the child would be leaving in two days, Grandma Liu, along with Chen Xiulan and Du Juan, spent even more time in the kitchen, making dishes that Feng Qingbai loved for every meal.

During the final two days before his departure, the Liu family courtyard was anything but peaceful.

Just as Feng Qingbai was about to leave, someone came to the Liu family residence again.

When Kang Ziyu arrived at the Liu family courtyard, the family had just finished breakfast and was chatting casually outside the kitchen door.

Upon seeing the person enter the hall, Liu Muqiu immediately went into a state of alert.

“Li Junyue,” Kang Ziyu directly addressed the woman standing beside Mrs. Liu, calling her by her former name.

“Miss Kang, you’re mistaken,” Grandma Liu’s face turned cold. “This is our daughter, Liu Muqiu, not someone named Li Junyue.” She then added firmly, “Our Liu family’s door is open to guests, but we don’t welcome those who come looking for trouble. If Miss Kang has no business here, please leave and stop causing trouble for Lord Kang!”

This was one of the harshest things Grandma Liu had ever said to a guest.

Liu Yusheng didn’t have much contact with Kang Ziyu, but she knew what she had done, especially since Wei Hong was always the one delivering gossip.

Liu Yusheng stood next to Grandma Liu, patting her hand gently. “Grandma, please go to the main hall with Grandpa and the elders. We, the younger generation, will handle this.”

When she saw Kang Ziyu in the county, she had already suspected that someone like her wouldn’t give up so easily.

At first, she thought Kang Ziyu would come knocking the very next day, but to her surprise, she had become more patient than before.

It seemed that she had spent the last few days thinking things through before coming to the door.

Reassured by Liu Yusheng, Grandma Liu and the elders finally entered the main hall, their faces dark. Before they left, Du Juan gave Liu Zhiqiu a harsh glare, thinking about how they had ended up with people like that, bringing nothing but trouble to the family.

What others said or how they reacted, Kang Ziyu didn’t care in the slightest. She only focused on Liu Muqiu. “Junyue, we’ve known each other for many years. Don’t think I wouldn’t recognize you just because you changed your name. Even if you changed your face, I’d still be able to tell. We were sisters at one point. I didn’t come here to cause trouble, but can we talk privately for a moment?”

“Miss Kang, there’s nothing that can’t be said openly. If you have something to say, just say it here. There’s no need to take Muqiu elsewhere.” Liu Yusheng interjected, holding onto Liu Muqiu and preventing her from agreeing.

There was a flicker of madness in Kang Ziyu’s eyes, a sign that she was capable of losing her composure and doing something shocking. Liu Muqiu’s current fragile state couldn’t withstand even the slightest harm.

With the elders already in the main hall, the remaining people, besides Liu Yusheng and Liu Zhiqiu, were mostly the younger generation, including Shi Xianrou, Feng Qingbai, and others.

Kang Ziyu’s gaze swept over the group, before finally landing on Li Junyue with a light smile. “Are you really this heartless? Won’t you even talk to me alone? We once shared many peaceful days together. Junyue, have you really forgotten all the kindness between us?”

Seeing Liu Muqiu staring at her, biting her lip in silence, Kang Ziyu changed her tone. “Since I can recognize you, the Li family surely can as well. I wonder if Elder Madam Li knows that you’re alive again? Fifty thousand taels to buy back a living person—I’m afraid that’s not enough in her eyes.”

“Let’s go outside and talk,” Liu Muqiu took a deep breath and brushed away Liu Yusheng’s hand that was holding her back. “I’ll go with her. Don’t worry, I’m not so easy to bully now.”

This sentence earned a sarcastic laugh from Kang Ziyu.

Watching the two women walk out, Liu Yusheng pursed his lips. “Kang Ziyu’s state now is like being driven to a dead end. She must have come to ask Muqiu for help with something. She’s not here with good intentions.”

“Ah, if she really loses her mind, Little White Lotus’s small frame wouldn’t be able to handle her. I wonder what they’ll say to each other,” Shi Xianrou shook her head and sighed, purposely speaking loudly enough for the people sitting behind to hear.
