Chapter 639: A Letter of Challenge

Back at the restaurant, Qian Wanjin downed half a pot of tea, trying to calm his pounding heart. Then, he slammed the table and stood up.

“Damn it! I almost died! It was that close! I haven’t even married or had kids yet!”

Everyone, “…” Is that the point?

“Feng Qingbai, if you catch that person, tell me! I’m going to beat him until his soul is barely hanging on!”

Feng Qingbai lazily lifted his eyelids, “If he really wanted to kill you, do you think you’d still be here shouting? If we catch him, you should be thanking him for showing mercy.”

“… Are you my brother or not?” Why are you speaking for the enemy?

“I’m not.”

“Nannan, we don’t need him anymore, he doesn’t have any brotherly feelings!”

Liu Yusheng helplessly sighed. “Stop causing trouble, Feng Qingbai is right. Think about the situation at the time, wasn’t it like that?”

Qian Wanjin finally calmed down, sitting back down to think it over, then coughed lightly. “Seems like that’s true… since they didn’t kill me, why shoot the dart? To scare me? Just for fun?”

“I think it’s more of a provocation. They’re issuing a challenge,” Liu Yusheng raised her eyes, looking at Feng Qingbai, who had started walking slowly along the wall after entering the private room. “Do you feel the same way?”

Her words made everyone frown. Upon careful thought, it did seem to resemble that kind of thing.

Feng Qingbai didn’t answer, his steps eventually stopping at the window sill. He reached out and slowly pulled out a piece of paper from between the cracks in the window frame.

“!” Qian Wanjin’s eyes bulged. “Damn, what is this? Feng Qingbai, how did you know there was something there?!”

“They were in this room earlier,” Feng Qingbai replied.

Everyone, “…” No wonder, when they came up, the man had casually pointed and indicated this room.

Qian Wanjin and Liu Zhiqiu both leaned in, craning their necks. “Quick, open it and see what the note says. Could it really be a challenge letter?”

Feng Qingbai gently unfolded the note, and when he saw the words written on it, his pupils slightly contracted.

— The second round, guess who will win and who will lose?

“Damn, it really is a challenge letter!” Qian Wanjin exclaimed. Then he asked, “What does ‘the second round’ mean?”

“If I’m not mistaken, the first round refers to the struggle between us and the Dowager Consort,” Feng Qingbai said, crumpling the note into a ball and crushing it with a palm strike. “That person was part of the covert forces working for the Dowager Consort at that time.”

“Oh! So we won the first round, and he lost. He can’t accept it, so he’s challenging us again? What is wrong with him? Does he think this is a joke?!”

“He’s playing a game.” Feng Qingbai curled his lips, his smile cold. “The attacks he sent before were never all-out efforts. I suspect his real intention wasn’t to kill me, but to deepen the hatred between me and the Dowager Consort, pushing us to a point where we would either kill each other or be trapped in a never-ending feud!”

That person treated the rivalry between the two powerful factions as a game.

He wove his way between them, pulling strings and watching with amusement as the two sides fought to the death!

Liu Yusheng was speechless. She had experienced several assassination attempts with Feng Qingbai herself.

Now, recalling those events, it seemed like what Feng Qingbai said was true. The other party hadn’t really put their full effort into it.

An assassin sent by an assassin organization couldn’t be that incompetent, failing to harm their target each time, and always ending in complete failure.

Those who were sent seemed more like cannon fodder—just playing a supporting role.

“…What a freak!” Qian Wanjin walked back to the table and sat down. “Feng Qingbai, I’ve finally found someone even more twisted than you!”

Wasn’t he a freak?

Power struggles usually involved lives being lost at every turn, yet this person treated it like a game, even going so far as to send a challenge!

He treated human lives like they’re nothing!

Was he born with his brain twisted up by his mother when he was a child?!

“People do things for a reason. What’s his goal in all this?” Liu Yusheng pondered.

Her words made everyone in the room fall silent.

No one would engage in pointless actions. Yet, despite their repeated encounters with this person, they still couldn’t figure out his true intentions.

“I’ll have people investigate this matter. No one is without weaknesses; we just haven’t found his yet.” Feng Qingbai was the calmest among them.

Though the other party had frequently been in opposition to him, Feng Qingbai had an inexplicable feeling that everything this person did was solely aimed at him, and he wouldn’t easily target those around him.

The Qixi Festival was supposed to be a joyful occasion, but after all that had happened, when they left the tavern, the streets seemed noticeably emptier.

The group returned home feeling dejected.

The most disappointed one was Liu Muqiu.

It was the Qixi Festival, a day for lovers to spend time together, and she had finally managed to celebrate it with Zhiqiu. But then, an unexpected person ruined it all.

Back home, Little White Lotus’ petals drooped, and she sat by the stone table, listless.

Shi Xianrou, holding her own colorful ball, said, “Little White Lotus, don’t be discouraged. This is just the beginning. When I was pursuing our Xiao Jinzi, I even prepared myself for ten years of hard work.”

“What if ten years doesn’t work?” Little White Lotus asked, defeated.

“After ten years, there’s always the next ten! A lifetime is long, you know!”

“…” Little White Lotus stared at the colorful ball in her hand, which was blinding. Her lifetime might only be five years. “Xianrou, if you put that ball away, maybe the shock I’m getting will be a little less.”

“Hold on, this is something our Xiao Jinzi almost lost his life for, I have to treasure it. Otherwise, he’ll throw a tantrum.” Even if she didn’t like it, she had to act like she adored it. Her little wife was proud and stubborn—if she didn’t spoil her, she’d make a fuss.

After such a huge shock, she was still pale when she returned, and Liu Muqiu felt a pang of heartache.

Little White Lotus rolled her eyes and turned to look at the girl sitting on the other side, playing with her colorful tourmaline bracelet. “Nannan, you’ve been staring at that bracelet for ages. Why don’t you wear it? Cover it with your sleeve, and think about my feelings for once.”

The gift in Nannan’s hand had been prepared by Feng Qingbai long ago. When they returned home and parted at the second courtyard gate, he quietly put it on her wrist. It had surprised the little girl so much.

But she, Liu Muqiu, had nothing.

Liu Yusheng put the bracelet on her wrist. The colorful tourmaline gleamed against her fair skin, reflecting light like a rainbow cloud, dazzling and translucent. She liked it immensely.

Hearing Little White Lotus speak, she finally gave her a sympathetic glance. “How about I get you a gift to comfort you?”

“…” Little White Lotus tilted her head, utterly disheartened.

What she wanted was a gift from Zhiqiu.

What’s the use of a consolation prize?

It only made her feel more pitiful.

In the second courtyard, there was another round of conversation.

Qian Wanjin and Liu Zhiqiu were lounging in Feng Qingbai’s room, with their legs crossed.

“Feng Qingbai, I’m sleeping with you tonight.”

“Get lost.”

“I am terrified. If it weren’t for you, I’d have almost been dead by now. I’m just a tea and wine seller, not that many enemies. Until I recover, you’re assigned to protect me closely.”
