Chapter 606: Do You Dare to Swear?
Liu Yusheng’s sudden intervention caused the table to fall into silence.
Even the two elders of the Liu family had never seen their granddaughter speak so bluntly. One could even say she was angry.
After the brief silence, the elders of the Liu family simply smiled and continued eating.
Their granddaughter was truly upset.
All these years, the dinner table had never been a place of discord. Only at the dinner table was the family truly complete, filled with laughter and warmth.
The Chen family members didn’t understand this—or perhaps they simply wanted to stir up trouble while everyone was gathered. No wonder their little girl was angry.
Chen Xiulan no longer had the energy to be upset with the two people across from her.
The conversation in the main hall that afternoon had been anything but pleasant.
Once again, she had witnessed her sister-in-law’s shamelessness. As for her eldest sister—who had always seemed quiet and reserved—it turned out she had hidden calculations of her own.
“Nannan, how can you speak like that? No matter what, I am still your elder…” Wang-shi said, somewhat annoyed.
“Daughter-in-law of our in-laws,” Grandma Liu said, “if we’re talking about elders, my husband and I count as yours as well. Let’s finish the meal first. It won’t take much time. When the whole family is together, there’s no need to bring up unpleasant matters. There will be plenty of time for that later.”
She smiled at Wang-shi, then turned to the Yang sisters, who had their heads lowered. “If you two feel wronged, you can talk to us elders later. In this family, the elders handle all matters fairly. We won’t take sides. If there was any lack of hospitality, that would be our fault as hosts, and we ask for your understanding.”
The Yang sisters’ faces flushed red in an instant. “Grandmother-in-law, you must be joking. It’s really nothing serious. L-let’s just eat.”
Being singled out and lectured by an elder felt like getting slapped in the face—it was utterly humiliating.
At first, with Wang-shi taking the lead, they only needed to stay in the background. But now, that no longer seemed possible.
For the rest of the meal, they ate without tasting a single bite.
Meanwhile, the Liu family remained as they always were—completely unaffected.
They chatted and laughed as if nothing had happened, enjoying the meal in perfect harmony.
After dinner, the group moved to the main hall. Once everyone was seated, Grandma Liu finally spoke up.
“In-law, what was it you wanted to say during dinner?”
A wave of frustration surged from the soles of Wang-shi’s feet to the top of her head.
She had carefully planned to stir up trouble during the meal, but she had been forced to hold back. Now that dinner was over, the momentum she had built up was completely gone.
Without that energy, how was she supposed to bring up the issue?
She had a strong feeling that the Liu family knew exactly what they were doing and were doing it on purpose.
“Grandmother-in-law, it’s not that I wanted to cause trouble during the meal,” Wang-shi said. “But we came all this way for a reason, didn’t we? We came to ask for help with some family matters. We’re relatives, after all, and it’s only right that we support each other. But your newly registered daughter here went and bullied Shuqing and Shuyu. What, are you looking down on your poor relatives?”
As she spoke, she turned her gaze to Liu Muqiu, who sat beside Liu Yusheng with her head lowered, silent. Then she added, “And don’t blame me for speaking bluntly. She may have taken the Liu family name, but she has no blood relation to you.
When it comes down to it, she’s still an outsider. Since she has the privilege of staying with the Liu family, she should be grateful. How can she use her status to bully the real Liu family relatives? Blood ties—that’s what truly makes a family!”
Hearing this, Grandma Liu stilled for a moment. Instead of questioning Liu Muqiu, she turned to the Yang sisters and asked, “What kind of grievances did you suffer on the mountain? Tell me, so I can understand.”
Yang Shuqing looked a bit flustered in this situation. She had expected Wang-shi to step in for her, but she hadn’t thought she would have to face this confrontation directly.
No matter what she said, she would end up offending someone.
After a long pause, she finally mumbled, “It… it wasn’t anything serious. It’s just that Miss Muqiu accidentally fell and said I pushed her. But I really didn’t…”
“You didn’t push her with your hands—you used your knee,” Shi Xianrou interjected, pointing at her own eyes. “I saw it.”
Yang Shuqing’s face turned pale. “No, I didn’t! Miss Shi, you’re close with Miss Muqiu, but that doesn’t mean you should falsely accuse me!”
“Do you dare to swear?” Liu Zhiqiu asked. “No need for any harsh curses that might involve your ancestors—just swear that if you did use your knee, you’ll never get married in this lifetime.”
Liu Yusheng turned away, stifling a laugh.
Her second brother was being devious again.
Yang Shuqing was rendered speechless, her face turning red and purple in embarrassment.
How could a young woman swear on something as serious as her own marriage prospects?
Her silence stretched on. Wang-shi was so angry that her vision blurred, and even Chen Xiuying’s aged face turned red with shame.
Wasn’t this basically an admission that she had done it?
She was the one who brought them here, and now she had lost all face!
“It was just some harmless roughhousing between young people. A little bump or scuffle—once it’s over, it’s over. There’s no need to keep bringing it up. Since everything’s settled, everyone should just go back, wash up, and get some rest,” Grandma Liu declared.
Making a big deal out of something so trivial? That was never the way of the Liu family. If a household couldn’t even maintain basic peace, how could it remain stable?
With a daughter-in-law like Wang-shi, it was no wonder the Chen family was always in turmoil.
Wang-shi had been brewing all afternoon for this moment, only to have it dismissed so easily. She left with a dark expression, shooting a vicious glare at Yang Shuqing before storming off.
As stupid as a pig. From now on, she would wash her hands of the sisters’ affairs.
She hadn’t come all this way just to meddle in their marriage prospects anyway. What benefit was there for her in helping them?
Back in the inner courtyard, Liu Muqiu hesitantly asked Liu Yusheng, “Nannan, do you think Grandpa and Grandma will be mad at me?”
“Why would they be mad at you? Grandpa and Grandma are sharp—they know even if you did it on purpose, you had your reasons,” Liu Yusheng sighed.
The Liu family had always protected their own.
Even if Grandpa and Grandma needed to teach Liu Muqiu something, they would only do so privately. They would never scold her in front of others.
Moreover, as long as Liu Muqiu didn’t harbor ill intentions toward her family and her actions had reasons behind them, the Liu family would always protect her.
Meanwhile, the elderly couple had already gone to their room to sleep.
Since Wang-shi and the others had come from far away, they naturally had to stay at the Liu courtyard for a day or two.
Chen Xiulan was in charge of hosting them and took them to the guest rooms.
After providing them with clean bedding and ensuring their accommodations were settled, Chen Xiulan was about to leave, but Chen Xiuying grabbed her arm.
“Xiulan, I need to talk to you.”
“Sister, didn’t we already talk about this this afternoon?”
“At that time, you were talking about lending money, but you still haven’t agreed, have you?” Chen Xiuying complained. “I know, we showed up unexpectedly, and I’m sure you’re annoyed. No one likes poor relatives showing up uninvited, right? If I had any other choice, I wouldn’t have come to ask you.”
“Sister, I never saw you as poor relatives. But if you wanted to come, fine—why did you bring your husband’s nieces along? They aren’t your daughters, so why are you meddling in their marriages? Where are their parents? What you did was improper, completely disregarding my dignity. How do you expect me to respond to you?”
“How did I disregard your dignity? I married into the Yang family, so naturally, I’m part of the Yang family. If they ask me to look after something, how can I refuse?”
Hearing this, Chen Xiulan’s expression turned completely cold. “If you see yourself as part of the Yang family, then why did you come to me?”
