Chapter 580: Did You Not See Me as a Man?
Xue Qinglian shook off his hand and wiped his clothes in disgust, rolling his eyes. “Idiot.”
“What do you mean by idiot??”
“It means fool.”
Leaving that explanation behind, Xue Qinglian strolled back to his room.
“You’re calling me a fool?! Damn you! Xue Qinglian, get back here and explain yourself!” Qian Wanjin stomped his foot and chased after him, ranting.
“You were kicked out first thing in the morning—aren’t you tired? Don’t disturb my rest. I’m preparing medicine.” Seeing Qian Wanjin blocking the door, refusing to let him close it, Xue Qinglian’s face darkened.
“Go ahead, go ahead! Poison your own kin! I swear, I’ll go complain to Nannan and tell her you have no brotherly love! I’ll make her cut off your medicine supply!”
“…” This damn idiot!
Xue Qinglian gave up. He didn’t even bother closing the door, just flopped onto his bed and instantly started snoring like thunder.
Qian Wanjin gritted his teeth. “…You win!”
He wanted to drag Xue Qinglian up to continue arguing but didn’t dare.
He was afraid the bed was poisoned!
This bastard had slept on poisoned sheets more than once—he had fallen for it several times before!
Ever since Feng Qingbai arrived, Kang Shiming had rarely disturbed Liu Yusheng. Only when it came to preparing medicine did he send someone to find her, careful not to add to her burdens.
Feng Qingbai, on the other hand, was hardly ever idle.
Every day, Feng Qingbai would go out with Kang Shiming to observe the people’s conditions, continuously discussing plans for post-disaster reconstruction.
As the Regent, he couldn’t just indulge in romance and ignore his responsibilities when his people were suffering.
He was even busier than when he was in the capital.
Wei Zi arrived on the fifth day after Feng Qingbai, accompanied by Shi Xianrou.
Both of them were covered in dust and exhaustion.
At that moment, Liu Yusheng, Qian Wanjin, and Xue Qinglian were just about to visit the newly renovated Wanjin Restaurant.
They ran into each other right at the entrance of the county office.
Seeing them, Qian Wanjin put his hands on his hips, ready to scold them. But when he noticed Shi Xianrou’s exhaustion, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything harsh. Instead, he felt a dull ache in his heart.
“…Why did you take so long to get here!” In the end, all he could manage was a weak grumble.
Shi Xianrou dismounted, grabbed Qian Wanjin, and leaped over the courtyard wall with him.
Her movements were swift and precise, so cool that Liu Yusheng almost had stars in her eyes again.
“Xue Qinglian, I guess we won’t be checking out the restaurant for now. Let’s head back.”
“Go back just to watch them be all lovey-dovey? Hell no! How is that fair?!” Xue Qinglian cursed.
He lived right next to Qian Wanjin, and the guesthouse walls of the county office were thin—not soundproof at all!
Was a lonely man just supposed to suffer like this?
Liu Yusheng’s lips twitched. “How about you go into seclusion for a day? When you shut yourself away, even thunder can’t shake you.”
Xue Qinglian said seriously, “Nannan, when I’m not on my own turf, I never go into seclusion.”
“Then just endure it.”
“…”
The girl turned around and walked back inside, leaving him standing there, torn about whether to take a step forward or not.
A moment later, he caught up to her. “Nannan, how about we swap rooms? Yours is quieter and undisturbed—it’s perfect for me.”
“And what about me?”
“Don’t you have Feng Qingbai? If they get noisy over there and you two make a racket over here, you’ll be disturbing each other equally. No one gets an advantage—it’s fair.”
Liu Yusheng yanked off the scented sachet from her waist and smacked Xue Qinglian with it a few times before storming off without looking back.
Meanwhile, in another part of the courtyard, Qian Wanjin had barely landed inside after being pulled over the wall when the woman pressed him against it before he could even point out which room was his.
“Hey-hey-hey, Xiao Shitou, it’s broad daylight—don’t get violent! I was just muttering, I didn’t even curse at you! You can’t hit me—”
Shi Xianrou lifted her head and fiercely sealed his lips with a kiss.
The world fell silent.
And for the first time, her heart felt at peace.
She sensed that the man had calmed down, then pulled away, hugged him tightly, and buried her face in his chest. “Qian Wanjin, I almost died from anxiety.”
Qian Wanjin paused for a moment, then wrapped his arms around her, awkwardly patting her back. His handsome face turned red. “Look at you, why panic? I, Qian Wanjin, am blessed with good fortune—what could possibly happen? And here I am, standing right in front of you, and you’re still worried.”
Hearing the slight quickening of his heartbeat in his chest and feeling his awkward attempts to comfort her, Shi Xianrou closed her eyes and smiled.
As a wife—she had no other skills apart from her mouth.
Could she not be anxious?
She had rushed here in a hurry, and two fast horses had almost died from exhaustion along the way.
She hadn’t dared to close her eyes.
From now on, she must keep him in her sight to feel truly at ease.
The two arrived in the living room about half an hour later.
Liu Yusheng was sitting there waiting for them, and had even thoughtfully prepared a pot of refreshing tea.
Seeing them enter, Qian Wanjin’s face turned slightly red, looking like a shy little wife. His lips were even glistening. Liu Yusheng teased, “That was fast? I thought it would take at least half an hour.”
Shi Xianrou casually sat down, took the tea she offered, and drank it in one go. “Feng Qingbai took that long?”
Qian Wanjin looked around, feeling that something about their conversation sounded a bit strange. After a while, he jumped up, his fingers trembling as he pointed at the two of them. “You… you’re both young ladies! Don’t you know what modesty is? Why are you saying such things out loud! If we’re talking about endurance, I won’t lose to Feng Qingbai!”
“Pfft!” Shi Xianrou almost spat her tea out.
“Hahahaha!” Liu Yusheng laughed so hard she had to clutch her stomach, then went back to her room. “Xianrou, you can verify it yourself.”
“…”
Shi Xianrou wiped her face, then turned to meet the accusing look from the man. “…I believe you, you must be very enduring.”
“…” It was supposed to be a compliment, but Qian Wanjin felt insulted.
Why could two young ladies talk about such things? And they didn’t even care that he, a grown man, was present?
Wait a minute!
“Shi Xianrou, explain yourself! Do you two not see me as a man?!”
He wanted to be seen as a husband, but Shi Xianrou certainly wouldn’t say that. At times like this, she had to smooth things over. “Who dares to say you’re not my man?”
“Of course, we’ve already been betrothed, we’ve got a clear future ahead of us, hmph!”
“Exactly,” Shi Xianrou stood up and drank another cup of tea. “Where’s your room? I’m going to lie down for a bit.”
“Should I have someone help you tidy up a guest room?” Qian Wanjin’s eyes drifted somewhere.
To my room, my room…
“No need, let me just sleep in your bed. You’re my man.”
“Alright, I’ll take you there!”
Liu Yusheng, who hadn’t gone far outside, laughed again, nearly doubling over.
Shi Xianrou was really getting better at sweet-talking Qian Wanjin.
She was definitely being treated like a wife.
To avoid disturbing someone while they were sweet-talking their wife, Liu Yusheng didn’t leave her room at noon, and the guesthouse remained quiet for a while.
In the afternoon, there was a commotion outside.
It was noisy.
Occasionally, the laughter of young women could be heard, faintly drifting in.
Liu Yusheng frowned.
She still didn’t go out to check. Perhaps the Kang family was entertaining guests; she couldn’t just go out and ask them to be quieter.
After all, she was a temporary guest herself.
Fortunately, the noise only lasted for a while, and then it stopped. Liu Yusheng fell into a light sleep, completely unaware of what was happening outside.
