Chapter 579: Handsome Means Amazing
“Oh, so Miss Kang is capable of analyzing the situation? I always thought you were just blunt and straightforward—without much thought.”
She counted the invitations—more than thirty in total. If they accepted all of them, Feng Qingbai would be completely tied up.
Her words carried clear sarcasm, and she didn’t even bother to lift her gaze while speaking. This blatant disregard made Kang Ziyu take several deep breaths before forcing a smile.
“I know I have offended you many times before, County Lady, and I hope you can forgive me. My mother has scolded me over it multiple times, and I’ve reflected on myself. I realize now that I can’t just say whatever comes to mind in any situation. My personality does tend to offend people.”
“Hmm.”
“…” Kang Ziyu took another deep breath. “I came today to make peace. The misunderstandings between us aren’t deep grudges, after all. You have always been magnanimous—I hope you won’t hold onto past grievances.”
She glanced at Liu Yusheng after speaking, only to find that the other woman had no intention of responding at all. She continued, “I see that these invitations are troubling you, but I might have an idea that could help resolve your dilemma.”
Liu Yusheng found it amusing. “Go on.”
So Kang Ziyu thought she was struggling?
Did she assume Liu Yusheng was caught between not wanting to offend the noble families and fearing to upset Feng Qingbai?
“If His Highness were to accept every invitation, he simply wouldn’t have enough time. He’s a busy man, handling important matters—how could he spend his days socializing with local gentry? However, if he rejects all of them outright, he’ll offend the noble families, and I fear your elder brother may face obstacles in his governmental affairs within the prefectural city.
Instead, why not let me handle this? I can arrange for all the families to gather in one place. That way, His Highness only needs to make a brief appearance and exchange a few polite words, and the matter will be settled. It would preserve the noble families’ dignity without taking up too much of His Highness’s time. County Lady, what do you think?”
Liu Yusheng neatly stacked the invitations and placed them in the corner of the table. She smiled and said, “I don’t think much of it. The affairs here don’t require Miss Kang’s concern, but thank you. If there’s nothing else, I’d suggest you not linger. Though I don’t need to go out and help with relief work, I still have my own matters to attend to.”
“You—!” Kang Ziyu’s expression darkened.
“Why are you so stubborn? I’m doing this for your own good! This is a win-win solution, and you could even use this opportunity to help your brother build connections. Isn’t that a good thing? Your brother is a governor, and sooner or later, he’ll have to work with local gentry. If he offends them now, do you realize how much trouble he’ll face in the future? You truly don’t know who has your best interests at heart!”
Liu Yusheng lifted her gaze, meeting Kang Ziyu’s eyes. A soft smile tugged at her lips. “Miss Kang always claims to have everyone’s best interests in mind. Was that also your reasoning when you took it upon yourself to find a husband for Miss Li?”
Though she appeared poised and graceful, there was a chill hidden in her smile that made one uneasy.
Kang Ziyu bit her lip hard, barely restraining herself from lashing out.
She had been talking about organizing a gathering for the noble families, yet Liu Yusheng deliberately brought up Li Junyue!
It was obvious she was provoking her on purpose!
“Since you refuse my goodwill, there’s no point in me staying here and playing the villain!” Rising to her feet, Kang Ziyu flicked her sleeves and strode away, her gaze dark and stormy as she looked ahead.
Outside, Feng Qingbai happened to be walking through the corridor.
Kang Ziyu immediately halted and stepped aside. Only when the man brushed past her did she finally murmur, “This humble lady, Kang Ziyu, greets Your Highness.”
The only response she received was the sight of his tall, elegant figure disappearing ahead.
That deep purple robe reflected in her eyes, making her momentarily forget to look away.
Soon, from inside the hall, the man’s voice rang out—clear and cool, yet laced with indulgent warmth. “Are you troubled by all these invitations?”
“Feng Qingbai, did you deliberately dump these on me just to make me a target?” The young woman playfully huffed.
“Make you a target?”
“I mean, take the blame for you!”
The man chuckled softly. “If there’s blame to take, I should be the one taking it for you.”
Kang Ziyu could almost picture the deep affection and tenderness in the man’s eyes as he spoke those words.
Just like the look in his eyes when he held Liu Yusheng in his arms on the street—exactly the same!
Turning away, Kang Ziyu walked off step by step, leaving those voices behind. The darkness in her eyes deepened.
Inside the hall, Liu Yusheng waved the stack of invitation cards in her hand and asked the man, “What do you plan to do with these?”
Feng Qingbai took the invitations and casually tossed them aside. “There’s nothing to deal with. Just ignore them.”
“Won’t that offend people?”
“Do you think I’m afraid of offending people?” The man chuckled helplessly. “Is a king someone that just any country gentry can meet whenever they please? If I go, it’s giving them immense honor. If I don’t, it’s only natural. No one would dare complain.”
“…” Liu Yusheng patted her forehead. As expected, she could be pretty naive sometimes. They hadn’t grown up in the same world, so their perspectives were completely different.
She had been worrying about how to decline politely—avoiding offending people while also ensuring that neither Feng Qingbai nor her brother suffered any negative consequences. She had aimed for balance.
But to Feng Qingbai, this wasn’t even worth considering. It all depended on whether he was willing to give them face or not.
He was the one in control.
“Feng Qingbai.”
“Hmm.”
“You’re so handsome!” The young woman clasped her hands together, eyes sparkling like stars.
Feng Qingbai raised an eyebrow, deep laughter welling up in his eyes.
No matter when, as long as she was there, she could always brighten his mood.
‘Handsome’ means ‘awesome.’
These words especially made his heart bloom with joy.
Leaning close to the young woman’s ear, he whispered, “Shengsheng, say that sentence in bed next time.”
“…” Liu Yusheng’s face instantly turned bright red. Unwilling to face this man who could make her legs weak with just a few words, she quickly changed the topic. “Where are Qian Wanjin and Xue Qinglian?”
She hadn’t seen them all morning since getting up. That wasn’t normal.
“They’re busy.” Feng Qingbai said casually, pulling her to sit down. “I won’t be able to stay here long. In a few days, I have to rush back to the capital.”
So, unnecessary people should stay out of sight.
“When are you leaving?” She knew how busy he was.
“Once Kang Shiming has handled matters enough for you to be free. Then, I’ll take you to Yunzhou, and from there, I’ll board a boat back to the capital.”
“Alright.” Liu Yusheng couldn’t sit still anymore. She peeked outside, checking that no one was around, then turned and burrowed into his arms.
Feng Qingbai was a little surprised. His voice dropped, teasing, “Are you throwing yourself at me? So eager?”
“…” She bit him.
If he hadn’t just told her he was leaving soon, would she be feeling this sour?
If she didn’t hug him now, once they parted, it would be days before she could again.
The moment he mentioned leaving, she already started missing him.
She just wanted to cling to him.
Feng Qingbai let her nibble and bite at his chest, simply tightening his embrace around her.
“Sheng Sheng, while I’m not here, you must take good care of yourself.”
“Got it.” The young woman answered in a muffled voice.
Feng Qingbai curled his lips into a smile.
If she wasn’t doing well, he would go mad.
At the doorway, there were faint footsteps quietly retreating.
Qian Wanjin tugged Xue Qinglian along, tiptoeing away.
Even after they had gone some distance, he still patted his chest. “Damn, Feng Qingbai’s gaze was terrifying! We were just sneaking a peek at him hugging her, not even kissing—why so shy?”
