Chapter 472: Lonesome as Snow
What he didn’t know was that Feng Qingbai wasn’t satisfied with the current progress.
A certain subordinate was seriously delayed. It seemed that after nearly ten years of absence from the camp, his abilities in all aspects really regressed.
Somewhere in the southwest, two figures had just climbed out of a towering mountain.
The young man in front almost wailed and shouted at the old man behind him, “Elder, can you hurry up? There’s already a lot of delay. I’ll definitely be skinned when I get back, and you won’t get a drop of my wine to drink!”
His master only gave him two months, but three months had now passed, and had only just climbed out of the mountain. Didn’t that mean that he was seriously incapable?
Even if returned to the capital, would his master still want him?
He’d be kicked out of the Shadow Guard camp! Why did he have to be appointed to such a task?
Couldn’t he be given a chance to live?
The grandpa’s footsteps behind him wandered without care. “What’s the hurry? I tell you, kid, don’t lie to this old man. If you can’t find the wine I like in the capital, your master doesn’t need to move. I’ll peel your skin first.”
Wei Lan squinted at the old man’s short, shriveled figure, and pursed his mouth in disdain. Peel his skin? Just him?
Don’t talk big and get your teeth blown out instead, old man!
”Come on, let’s have a drink first. Without wine, I can’t walk.” The grandpa didn’t care about Wei Lan’s contempt. His eyes locked on the several wine bottles hanging on him, his small eyes shining.
Hmph! Wei Lan picked up one, opened the cork, poured a few drops of wine into a two finger glass and handed it to him.
”Is this all?” The grandpa yelled.
”Isn’t this enough? Good wine should be tasted slowly. It’s possible for you to drink it all at once. Come back to the capital with me, and you can drink as much as you want when you get there.”
He had a total of five jars of wine with him, or stolen from Nannan’s room. This wine jar was the smallest in size. As an old drunkard, if he didn’t take it easy and emptied all the wine jars with him, could he still coax this grandpa’s ass to follow him?
”It’s just a few drops. Put a little more on the wine glass. It’s only a drop in my mouth. You’re too cruel.” The grandpa sucked the wine with an upside down glass, hummed in satisfaction and smiled, “How do you know I like wine? I haven’t seen you before, and few people know my name.”
”I don’t know that you love wine.” Wei Lan carried the wine jars, turned around and pushed the old man forward from behind. “Isn’t your name Elder Jiu? Can anyone who’s called this name not love wine?”
It was easy to guess that he must be an old alcoholic.
Otherwise, would he go to Nannan’s room to steal wine?
The mountains were stretched and far. Wouldn’t carrying five wine jars on the road be tiring? He wasn’t stupid.
In order to successfully complete his task without a hitch, he rummaged through a lot of things in the Liu family courtyard. Once he returned, Wei Da Hong wouldn’t spare him.
By then, a beating would be inevitable.
He had it rough.
He didn’t know how that guy was faring in Xinghua Village.
Without seeing each other for more than three months, he was as lonely as snow ah.
In the Liu family courtyard, Wei Hong was brandishing a branch like a tiger, all that filled the air was the formidable sound of cutting.
Her movements were smooth and her posture was light and athletic.
”Aunt Hong, well done!” Liu Zhiqiu cheered, watching in fascination.
”Achoo!” The sword dance was only one moment away from ending, and was ruined by a sneeze.
Wei Hong rubbed her nose, looked towards the room where Wei Lan had stayed before, and snorted.
Wei Da Lan must be scolding her behind her back.
She threw the branch to Liu Zhiqiu and said, “Practice by yourself. You lack internal martial arts, but hard martial arts can still be honed.”
When she had nothing to do, she would teach a few tricks. Liu Zhiqiu also learned quickly.
It was a pity that no one taught him as a child. If he wanted to learn internal martial arts, it was already too late. Otherwise, he had potentials of becoming a master among his generation.
Wei Hong stood aside and found that Liu Zhiqiu could dance without falling out of the moves she had just performed. He only lacked a little fluency, but satisfaction still surfaced in her eyes.
Unfortunately, Zhiqiu only took these as a game to play. He was interested in learning a few moves, but was too bored to set aside time to train.
A good talent was wasted.
”Zhiqiu, stop playing. Go to town later and buy a few slices of meat. The day is hot, and the vegetables aren’t enough. We have prepared less, and it’s not enough to eat.” Du Juan yelled in the vegetable field outside the courtyard wall.
”Got it.”
”When you pass by the village entrance, ask the people who are talking there who needs to buy something, and bring it along for them.”
”Okay!”
In May, the weather had already started to heat up in Xinghua Village. The family had a carriage, so from time to time, Du Juan would ask her son to buy fresh meat and vegetables.
It was very convenient.
Although there were only four people left at home, the villagers helped them with a bunch of work in the field, so they weren’t that tired. Everything was as usual. Nothing changed.
Liu Zhiqiu drove the carriage and yelled a round under the old acacia tree at the entrance of the village, mentally noting a list before directly heading to the town.
When he arrived in town, it was just after noon.
He had to buy meat his mother ordered, and then a couple of fishes for the uncles and aunts in the village, some candy, some needle and thread, some cloth, medicine for the village head’s house, rice paper and a brush.
Bits and pieces, so when he finished running the streets in town, he finally bought everything.
Liu Zhiqiu first bought those needle and thread paper and brushes, and finally went to the vegetable market.
Meat and fish were edible, and once stored in the carriage for a long time, they would stink.
At a familiar pork shop, two people dressed as maids were in front. Liu Zhiqiu stayed aside to avoid squeezing with them. Otherwise, people would say he would again be accused of being a rogue.
”Aren’t you maids from the Li residence in the front? Why do you still have to come out to buy food?” The vendor asked with a smile while chopping the ribs for the two maids.
In the wealthy and high-ranking families, rice and vegetables were delivered to the door regularly by merchants, or there would be special servants who would buy their daily serving at a time. Hence, it was quite rare for them to go out to buy vegetables temporarily.
A maid replied, “There is an honored guest in the house. The dishes are not enough and need to be added, so our master has ordered us to come out to buy some.”
”Yo, an honored guest came to the residence? In Cangwu town, who else can be more honorable than your Li family?”
The other maid covered her lips and laughed, replying mysteriously, “This distinguished guest is not from Cangwu Town, but from Yunzhou city. The Fifth Miss of our family is lucky to have a good sister, who helped find a marriage partner for her. He even personally came to see her.”
”If he takes a fancy to Fifth Miss, she’ll go all the way up and have both riches and honor in the future.”
The maid’s voice wasn’t too loud, nor too soft, and the surrounding vendors were clearly attracted to the news.
When they left, they immediately talked to each other.
”Since ancient times, women’s marriage has been arranged by parents and matchmakers. How could the Fifth Miss of the Li Mansion want a sister’s help to find her a marriage? Once this spreads, people will probably laugh their teeth off.”
”You don’t say. Just how eager is she to marry? If the man takes a fancy to her in the end, even then, she wouldn’t be much better. Since ancient times, men asked for women. How could women ask for men? They’re considered inferior from the very start. Can people in the man’s family look up to her when they marry?”
”What does it matter if they respect her? As long as it’s good for the Li family, the Matriarch will nod that head, and Fifth Miss will have to marry. There are too many awful things for high-ranking families.”
