FID – Chapter 421

Chapter 421: Vegetable Garden, Chickens, Country Dogs

In the carriage going to the next wine shop, Qian Wanjin was still feeling emotional.

”Lucky Nannan, your words just now were so inspiring, I still can’t get over it. You addressed those Xiapo villagers, right? Are you sure they can understand you?”

”Human effort is the decisive factor. If they want to move the right way, they will naturally listen. If they don’t listen, we can’t force them. A few words of advice are nothing but dedication. Now that they’re working under our leadership, we actually have a responsibility to them, to guide them right.” Liu Yusheng laughed.

This feeling was akin to a teacher in her previous life. He felt exasperated at the undisciplined students under his care for failing to live up to his expectations. He wanted them to live well, so he taught them sternly.

Her role was naturally not that of a teacher.

  An Cai was.

”In fact, the most surprising thing about Xiapo Village is the Village Chief. I can’t believe An Cai changed the most.”

”I don’t see where he has changed. His face has remained the same for ten thousand years, as if it was inherently elongated.”

”Pfft!” Visualizing that, he was indeed very much like he was born that way. Liu Yusheng had never seen An Cai having other emotional ups and downs, or other expressions.

But if An Cai’s change could be maintained, she could foresee that the Xiapo Village would be completely new in the future.

In their next four stops, the situation was basically the same as that of the Shangpo Village Wine Workshop.

Whether it was Malu Village, Xiushui Village, or Luxi Village, or Potou Village, when they arrived, the workers were already gathered, nervously waiting for their monthly salary.

Ten taels of silver was but a drop of water in a bucket with Liu Yusheng’s current worth, but for the people working in the winery, it could greatly improve their lives and take a heavy burden off their families.

This day, all the wineries were filled with cheers.

Of course, apart from the Xiapo villagers, none of the other workers mentioned eating out, visiting the gambling dens or brothels.

These were the people who lived their lives in a proper manner.

In Potou Village, Liu Yusheng also saw the two men who carried their mother to seek medical treatment after the New Year.

The family had been separated, and a worker was picked in each family. Two people were lucky to be chosen.

When they saw Liu Yusheng coming, both of them were extremely happy and took out a pair of insoles that they had prepared long ago and gave them to her.

When their elderly mother knew that their salary would soon be paid, and that the Little Divine Doctor would come, she started sewing the insoles early, stitch by stitch, so as to express her gratitude. There was nothing valuable in a poor family. There was only so much they could do for the time being.

Today the granny’s leg and foot had healed without any sudden sequelae.

The two sons in their family were both working in the new winery. Although the family had been separated, her sons and daughters-in-law were filial, and as long as they work well in the winery in the future, the family’s fortunes would certainly get better and better.

The granny expressed not only her gratitude to the Little Divine Doctor for saving her, but also her most heartfelt and simplest gratitude to the Little Divine Doctor for leading them out of poverty.

After the monthly salaries were distributed, Liu Yusheng spent two more days visiting each village to check the villagers’ medicinal herbs and fruit trees planting, and correcting any improper planting methods on the spot.

After these trips, everyone’s heart stabilized more solidly.

The Little Divine Doctor definitely wasn’t deceiving them with promises. Since she told them to plant, she would definitely acquire their harvest in the future.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have wasted so much time to visit and guide them.

This lady, who was not more than 16 years old, obviously had a halo all over herself, but she had labored and toiled sincerely with her fellow villagers, and was never beyond the reaches of the masses.

She was truly doing practical things for the people with all her heart and soul, realizing the benefits she had promised to the people.

After visiting each village, Liu Yusheng finally stopped to have a rest. The child’s business and exhaustion distressed the family.

Several old men in the family, including Qian Wanjin and Xue Qinglian, were scolded one by one.

They were all big men, but made the only little girl in the family so exhausted. Each and all of them were useless.

It was the end of March, and the weather in the south was getting warmer.

The old people and women in the village resumed their activities of chatting with each other.

They carried their small stools, shopped for some melon seeds and candy, brought their children together with a basketful of needlework, and agreed to go to someone, a neighbor’s house, for a get together. They chatted while working, and sometimes threw some snacks and candy to the children to pass the time.

The elders’ favorite spot was naturally the ancient acacia tree at the entrance of the village.

Spring was warm, and the branches of the ancient acacia tree appeared green. The green color of the tree alone represented the vitality of the village.

Carrying small stools, villagers went under the ancient acacia tree. After a short walk, a bunch of elderly friends arrived, one after another.

Talking, laughing and sunbathing, their days were pleasant and relaxing.

Meanwhile, no hustle and bustle of the prosperous capital city was in view. There was only the quiet passage of time.

Even time seemed to take special care of the village, with each second passing very slowly.

The elderlies in the village looked more than ten years younger than other people of the same age outside. They had white hair and a youthful complexion, as if they had immortan-like bones deep in the remote mountains.

When the two old people of the Liu family were free, their favorite place destination was also under the ancient acacia tree.

They would chat with a group of oldies and  hurl insults against each other; the laughter basically was endless.

Liu Yusheng didn’t arrange anything for herself that day. She put everything aside for the time being, followed the two elders and walked sedately with them around the village. She commented on how robust the vegetables in the garden had grown, or that the chickens in that yard were out walking again.

There were also many country dogs lying at the front doors, stretching out their long tongues and panting. They didn’t bark when they sniffed the familiar scent of the villagers. They only turned their round eyes and looked at them, then lay their heads back down, or put their heads on their front paws to continue enjoying their boring dog life.

They walked unhurriedly, and when they reached the ancient acacia tree, there were already a bunch of old men and women with gray or snow-white hair and children who had just learned to walk. They took small steps and staggered around to learn to walk. When they were tired, they sat down on the ground and climbed with hands and feet. Whenever they struggled too hard, their drools dripped from their mouths.

The group of old friends looked on and laughed happily.

”Uncles, Aunts, Great Grandpas, Great Grandmas…” Liu Yusheng approached and greeted each one along the way.

”Nannan, you came along today, too. Come here and squeeze here. You haven’t walked out with me for a long time.” A granny she greeted beckoned to her, pointing to a small vacant seat next to her. The three of the Liu family squeezed in.

”Hey, you don’t know how busy our Nannan has been these days. If she spares time to accompany us, she’d be too busy in her small clinic. She has to take care of the things in the wineries and the villages. She must be tired. Look at how sharp her chin is.” Another granny scolded and complained as soon as she sat down.

Although it was a casual conversation, Liu Yusheng felt a momentary burst of guilt.
