”If you’re willing, then go ahead.” Duan Jiaxu didn’t seem to care. “I originally thought it was all trivial matters and couldn’t be bothered. But now I’m starting to find it annoying. Since I can’t handle it well myself, I’ll have to bother the police.”
”What? You’re going to call the police on me for what I did?”
”Even though I don’t know if it’ll be effective,” Duan Jiaxu chuckled lightly. “But I have to try, don’t I?”
”Duan Jiaxu!” Jiang Ying’s breathing turned heavy, and then her voice gradually became tearful. She hysterically reminded him, “You think for yourself! If it weren’t for your dad, would my dad have died!”
Duan Jiaxu: “You said it yourself. It’s because of my dad.”
Jiang Ying: “You’re his son!”
”Following your logic, my dad killed someone while driving, so as his son, I’m also considered to have killed someone, right?” Duan Jiaxu gently said, “Then your father’s matter, as his daughter, why didn’t you die with him?”
There was silence on the other end, as if she hadn’t expected him to say such things: “What are you saying?”
Duan Jiaxu realized that his words weren’t very pleasant, but he didn’t feel that there was anything wrong with them. He curled his lips slightly, lowered his voice, and finally said, “What do you think, is this fun?”
Then, he hung up the phone.
Jiang Ying didn’t call again.
Duan Jiaxu added her number to the blacklist.
After taking a shower, Sang Zhi came out of the bathroom. Seeing Duan Jiaxu’s message, she replied with a smile: Not yet, I’m planning to sleep.
After a moment of thought, she added: But if you want to chat with me, I can reluctantly stay awake.
Suitor: Won’t you fall asleep while chatting?
Sang Zhi replied honestly: I probably will.”
Looking at the notes, Sang Zhi tapped open his contact info, thinking of various nicknames, but eventually changed it to “Duan Jiaxu” in a serious manner.
Duan Jiaxu: Am I here to help you sleep?
Sang Zhi frowned: Then you should sleep early too, why stay up late? It’s not good for you.
Sang Zhi: You’ll age quickly if you keep this up.
Ning Wei sat in her seat applying body lotion and casually asked, “Sangsang, where did you go tonight? You came back so late.”
”I went to see Duan Jiaxu,” Sang Zhi replied.
Ning Wei: “You went on a date?”
Sang Zhi blinked: “I’m with him now.”
Hearing this, Yu Xin turned her head: “So soon?”
Sang Zhi still felt like she had delayed things quite a bit. “He didn’t know I liked him before, but now that he knows, why should I still let him pursue me? It’s kind of strange.”
Yu Xin: “Yeah, it does seem like it.”
Sang Zhi lowered her head and continued chatting with Duan Jiaxu.
Duan Jiaxu: Well, whatever. I have a girlfriend now anyway. Sang Zhi: ?
Sang Zhi: Me!
Mine!
Duan Jiaxu: Alright.
Duan Jiaxu: I’ll go to bed early then.
Sang Zhi checked the time and said: We still have half an hour to chat.
Half an hour passed.
Perhaps because of today’s events, Sang Zhi still wasn’t sleepy at all and was full of energy. She hugged her phone, curled up in her blanket, showing no signs of wanting to sleep.
It was Duan Jiaxu who brought up sleeping after half an hour: Half an hour’s passed, time to sleep?
Sang Zhi rolled over unwillingly: I feel like we could chat for another half hour.
This time, Duan Jiaxu took several tens of seconds to respond, repeating her earlier words: You’ll age quickly if you keep this up.
A smile curled Sang Zhi’s lips as she repeated his words: Well, whatever. I have a boyfriend now anyway.
June arrived in the blink of an eye.
The project in Sang Zhi’s group was almost finished, just a few minor adjustments left, and it was soon submitted.
Exam week was also approaching, so Sang Zhi put the competition aside and began focusing on exam preparations. During this time, like Ning Wei, she also prepared a resume and started applying to suitable companies.
After much consideration, Sang Zhi called Li Ping and nervously mentioned that she wouldn’t be going home for the summer.
After hearing her thoughts, Li Ping surprisingly didn’t oppose it much, just reminded her to stay safe and insisted that she must come home during the National Day holiday.
Sang Zhi agreed.
Classes were gradually suspended, and Sang Zhi was keen on obtaining a scholarship, so she placed extra emphasis on her academic performance. Most of her time was spent in the library, and as a result, her meetings with Duan Jiaxu became less frequent.
Duan Jiaxu had mentioned several times about accompanying her, but Sang Zhi always refused. She felt that she couldn’t concentrate with him by her side. Besides, she thought he would find it boring to stay in the library. One day, after finishing her shower, Sang Zhi came out of the bathroom. She climbed onto her bed, and just before falling asleep, she heard Wang Ruolan saying, “It seems like there will be a campus-wide power outage tomorrow.”
Ning Wei: “Huh?”
Wang Ruolan: “They said it’s for maintenance in the power distribution room, and only a few dormitory buildings will have electricity. The others won’t.”
Ning Wei: “Is our dorm affected?”
Wang Ruolan: “Yeah.”
Yu Xin: “How long will it last?”
Wang Ruolan: “From seven in the morning to nine in the evening, a whole day.”
Yu Xin: “Just on that day? Without electricity, I won’t be able to charge my laptop.”
Sang Zhi also felt a bit annoyed, considering she needed to use her computer for revision. But after thinking it through, she realized it might not be a big deal. She planned to wake up the next day and go directly to an off-campus quiet café to spend the whole day.
However, what caught Sang Zhi off guard was that due to the combined effects of exam week and the power outage, the usually less crowded off-campus shops were all filled up. Even though she arrived early in the morning, she couldn’t find a single available spot. She glanced at the time, then entered the subway station, planning to take the subway to the city library to study.
At that moment, Duan Jiaxu happened to call her. His voice came through the phone, deep and pleasant, with a familiar smile: “Girlfriend, do you have time to go out for a meal today?”
Sang Zhi thought for a moment. “I’m heading to the city library now.”
”The city library?”
”Yeah,” Sang Zhi said, “Our school has a power outage, so I’m going there to find a place to study.”
Duan Jiaxu reminded her, “That library isn’t very spacious. There probably won’t be any available seats if you go now.”
Sang Zhi had been searching for a seat for a while, thinking she would surely find a place to study this time. Upon hearing his words, she paused, feeling frustrated to the point of wanting to lose her temper. “Why is it so difficult to find a place to study?”
It happened to be the weekend, and Duan Jiaxu was at home with nothing else to do at the moment. He chuckled lightly and leisurely made a suggestion, “Come to my place.”
Sang Zhi felt a bit tempted but hesitated. “Won’t you distract me?”
”I won’t.”
Not wanting to waste any more time, Sang Zhi didn’t dwell on it. “I’ll take the subway over now.”
After getting off the subway and passing through the turnstile, Sang Zhi lowered her head to check her phone. It was then that she noticed Duan Jiaxu’s message on WeChat, saying he was waiting for her at the subway station. She looked up and glanced around, and immediately spotted him standing not far away. Duan Jiaxu was wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and long sweatpants, with one hand in his pocket and the other holding his phone, looking down.
Tall, slender, and with a cool and aloof demeanor, he stood out in the crowd.
Sang Zhi was about to walk over when a woman approached him, her cheeks flushed and a shy smile on her face. It was obvious she wanted to exchange contact information with him.
Sang Zhi’s expression instantly turned sour. She silently walked over and stood next to them, not saying anything.
She heard the woman speak, her tone somewhat embarrassed. “Um, excuse me, could I, could I add you on WeChat?”
Upon hearing the voice, Duan Jiaxu lifted his eyelids, noticing Sang Zhi standing silently beside them. His gaze lingered on her for several seconds with interest before he turned to the woman and said, “No.”
After a moment’s pause, Duan Jiaxu looked at Sang Zhi again and chuckled lightly. “If my girlfriend finds out…”
”I’ll be in big trouble.”
The author has something to say:
Sang Zhi: Am I carrying a knife or something?
Duan Jiaxu: My girlfriend’s getting jealous, how adorable.
