SSB – Chapter 34.2

Her eyes were big and bright, the folds of her double eyelids were prominent, her curled and lifted eyelashes looked like two tiny brushes. The corners of her eyes naturally drooped, giving her a slightly puppy-like appearance.

  She looked clean and pure.

Their gazes locked for a few seconds.

Duan Jiaxu’s eyes slightly lowered, and he lazily said, “It’s done?”

”It’s done.” Sang Zhi withdrew her gaze and her hand. Soon after, she stood up. “I’ll go wash the towel.”

Then, Sang Zhi left the ward. The facade of forced composure immediately crumbled, and her tensed spine relaxed instantly. She gradually calmed her breathing, suppressing her racing heartbeat.

  No.

His eyes were closed properly, how could they suddenly open like that?

Couldn’t he give a warning beforehand?

”I’m going to open my eyes.”

  ”Get ready.”

  Couldn’t he?

  Couldn’t he?

  Scared me.

  Scared me to death.

Sang Zhi recalled her own reaction just now.

It should be quite normal, right?

It seemed like she didn’t have an excessive reaction, just treating it as an unusually ordinary thing.

  Maintaining a composed attitude.

  Sang Zhi gradually relaxed.

In the end, there was only one thought left in her mind.

This was the first and the last time in her life that she had wiped his face for him.

Back in the hospital room, Sang Zhi opened the folding chair and sat down on it. She thought for a moment, planning to use her jacket as a makeshift blanket to get through the night.

Duan Jiaxu was still awake. Seeing this, he called out, “Sang Zhi.”

Sang Zhi looked up: “What’s up?”

Duan Jiaxu said, “Use my jacket as padding to sleep.”

Sang Zhi hesitated for a moment, then replied, “Okay.”

He was wearing a long coat today, and when spread it out, it was larger than her entire body. Sang Zhi arranged it on the folding chair, tidied up a bit, and then got up to turn off the light.

  Duan Jiaxu didn’t speak again.

Sang Zhi reached into her own jacket and took out her phone, adjusting the brightness to the lowest setting. She noticed several missed calls from Ning Wei. She paused, suddenly remembering that she hadn’t informed her roommates that she wouldn’t be going back today.

She immediately opened WeChat and sent a message to their dorm group, saying, “I won’t be coming back today. I’m with a Big Brother at the hospital.”

Sang Zhi thought for a moment, changed the word “Big Brother” to “Big Sister,” and continued, “She’s sick, and I’m taking care of her at the hospital.”

Sang Zhi hadn’t checked her phone just now.

Ning Wei: Hey, that’s great. I got worried when you didn’t come back so late and didn’t answer the phone for a while. You gave me a scare.

Also, Jiang Ming seems to be looking for you. He said you haven’t been replying on WeChat. I told him you went out with a friend and haven’t returned yet.

  Sang Zhi: Okay.

Sang Zhi exited the chat window and scrolled down.

Since Ning Wei’s birthday, Sang Zhi had rarely seen this person. He hadn’t asked her out, just occasionally chatted with her, and not too frequently.

She opened the chat with Jiang Ming.

Seeing that he had sent her a few funny jokes and then a series of short voice messages, she thought of converting them to text. Her hand trembled a bit and she accidentally tapped to open one of them. A clear male voice instantly resonated in the small room.

  ”Sang Zhi, are you free?”

Sang Zhi was startled and quickly pressed the power button.

The message was abruptly cut off.

Sang Zhi involuntarily looked towards Duan Jiaxu, holding her breath unconsciously. But because the lighting was dim, she couldn’t tell if he was asleep or not.

She waited for a while, but Sang Zhi didn’t hear him say anything. She let out a sigh of relief and turned over gently.

She glanced at her phone again.

Sang Zhi didn’t dare to play those voice messages again. She planned to listen to them tomorrow and then respond. She checked her schedule for tomorrow and wasn’t sure if she could make it back for the first class. She had to message Ning Wei, “I might not make it to my Ideological and Political Theory class tomorrow. Can you help me with the attendance?”

  Ning Wei: Ok.

Sang Zhi turned off the screen, placed her phone to the side, and curled up in her coat. She sniffed, realizing that she was wrapped in Duan Jiaxu’s coat. It was as if his every essence enveloped her.

A faint tobacco scent mingled with the fragrance of lime.

  Like a mature young man.

Unintentionally, it gave her a sense of security.

Perhaps in this unfamiliar environment, Sang Zhi found it difficult to fall asleep. She closed her eyes and waited for a while, but sleep eluded her. Unable to resist the urge, she turned over again, wanting to play with her phone for a while.

She carefully extended her hand, groping toward the table.

Just at that moment, Duan Jiaxu suddenly spoke up, “Can’t sleep?”

Sang Zhi froze in her movements and nodded. “Yeah.”

”Because you didn’t finish listening to the voice message?”

”…” Sang Zhi glanced at him, suddenly feeling like her emotional roller coaster from earlier was joke. She felt a bit frustrated. “You heard it and still pretended to be asleep.”

”What pretending to be asleep?” he chuckled, “I simply didn’t say anything.”

”Well, that’s pretending to be asleep,” Sang Zhi mumbled, “Why do you enjoy eavesdropping so much?”

”Uh-huh,” Duan Jiaxu’s tone lifted, “Wasn’t that something you set up yourself? Even at such a young age, you’re learning how to set traps.”

Sang Zhi couldn’t argue with him, so she covered her head with the coat. “I’m not talking to you anymore, I want to sleep.”

Duan Jiaxu: “Didn’t you say you can’t sleep.”

Sang Zhi: “Even if I can’t sleep, I still need to sleep.”

Duan Jiaxu: “Come on, have a little chat with me.”

Sang Zhi uncovered her eyes and looked at him. “About what?”

”Do you want to finish listening to your voice messages?” His voice carried a playful tone, “Let me listen too. Who’s trying to make plans with our Little Sang Zhi?”

Sang Zhi was unwilling: “You don’t know them.”

Duan Jiaxu: “If you tell me, I’ll know. Just give me a brief description, and I will assess the situation for you.”

  She surrendered.

Just now, when he mentioned wearing a skirt in winter, he was like Li Ping.

Now, she sounded like Sang Rong.

Sang Zhi: “You want to vet someone before I even go on a dinner date?”

Duan Jiaxu: “Isn’t it because I’m worried that you’re young and might get deceived?”

Sang Zhi responded with indifference, “Oh, okay.”

Before Duan Jiaxu could say anything else, she rubbed her eyes and added, “There’s quite a lot, I can’t finish all of them tonight.”

  ”You should take notes then.”
