SSB – Chapter 9.2

  Duan Jiaxu: “……”

His gaze lingered on it for a while. The exhaustion that had persisted throughout the day dissipated in an instant, and he suddenly burst into laughter. In the quiet room, there was no sound except for a few suppressed laughter. Duan Jiaxu laughed for a while before closing the journal and heading to the bathroom to freshen up.

When he came out, he noticed the weekly journal on the table again.

Duan Jiaxu lowered his eyes, contemplating for a moment, and remembered Sang Zhi’s words, “I can’t get up.” He hesitated for a few seconds but ultimately sat back at his desk.

He took out a new notebook and tore off a sheet of paper.

  Early the next morning.

Sang Zhi struggled for a while, listening to the alarm clock beside her ringing multiple times. The thought of skipping the day crossed her mind countless times. Finally, when she heard the alarm on her phone go off as well, she reluctantly sat up.

Unhappily, she kicked off the blanket and got out of bed to freshen up.

Li Ping had already woken up and was preparing porridge. Hearing the sound of the door opening, she assumed it was Sang Rong waking up and didn’t say anything. When she came out of the kitchen and noticed the sleep-deprived Sang Zhi sitting at the dining table waiting for breakfast. She was taken aback: “Zhizhi? Why did you get up so early today?”

Sang Zhi rubbed her eyes: “I left my homework at school, I’m going there early to make it up.”

This kind of thing rarely happened, so Li Ping didn’t reproach her. She simply said, “Should I have your dad drive you to school? You can rest a little on the way.”

”No need.” Remembering what Duan Jiaxu said about meeting at the station, Sang Zhi mumbled, “I have plans to go with my classmates.”

Li Ping didn’t ask further. She went to the kitchen and prepared a bowl of porridge for her.

After breakfast, Sang Zhi grabbed her backpack and hurriedly left the house. She waited at the station for a few minutes before getting on the earliest bus, finding a seat and sitting down.

Her drowsiness was long gone, replaced by an overwhelming sense of nervousness that engulfed her as time passed.

As the destination drew nearer, she began to feel a bit uneasy. The distance from home to school wasn’t far. It took about ten minutes by bus.

Upon hearing the announcement of the upcoming stop, Sang Zhi got off the bus with the crowd, her heart pounding in her throat. She wasn’t sure where this nervousness came from.

Holding onto the straps of her backpack, she looked around.

There was no sign of him.

In fear that he might have been blocked by the bus stop sign, she even took a serious walk around the bus station.

  Still, she didn’t see him.

Sang Zhi took out her phone from her pocket and found that it was only half-past six. Not knowing Duan Jiaxu’s number, she couldn’t call him and could only wait. Feeling a bit frustrated, she sat down on the bus station’s chair.

After two minutes, her phone vibrated.

An unknown number from Yihe City appeared on the screen.

  Sang Zhi answered the call.

Sure enough, it was Duan Jiaxu on the other end. His voice came through the line, even more magnetic, deep, and pleasant: “Little one, are you awake?”

He was asking if she was awake when they were supposed to meet.

Sang Zhi felt speechless and answered slowly, “Yes, I am.”

After a moment, she also asked, “Are you not awake yet?”

”Hmm?” Duan Jiaxu chuckled softly. “How could I call you if I’m not awake?”

”Then why can’t I see you around?”

  ”That’s maybe because I haven’t left yet.”

This response matched Sang Zhi’s guess perfectly. She wasn’t surprised and kicked the pebble in front of her in displeasure. She said with a serious expression, “Gege, if you’re late, your future girlfriend will look like Ruhua.”

(Note: Ruhua is a beautiful character in Chinese legends.)

After a moment’s thought, she felt the impact was not strong enough, so she added, “And she’ll have a body like a Transformers character.”

As soon as she finished speaking, something warm pressed against her cheek.

Startled, she instinctively turned her head.

Duan Jiaxu was leaning against the bus stop sign, holding a glass bottle of milk. Today, he was wearing a light-colored red striped shirt, looking wild and unrestrained. He stared at San Zhi, and his light brown pupils appeared darker due to the lighting.

He straightened up, amused, and said, “Ruhua?”

  ”…”

  ”Transformers?”

  ”…”

”Is that the best you can come up with?”

  ”…”

”Kiddo.” Duan Jiaxu chuckled teasingly. “Do you have any conscience?”

Sang Zhi didn’t expect him to arrive so quickly. In front of him, Sang Zhi felt a bit guilty about what she had just said. She kept her head down, not daring to look at him or say anything.

After a couple of seconds, Duan Jiaxu’s eyes slightly crinkled at the corners as he handed the bottle of milk to her. He appeared contemplative as he remarked, “However, listening to you describe it like that, this combination…”

  ”…”

  ”It actually sounds quite appealing.”
