Chapter 7
Sang Yan endured for a moment, then suddenly turned off the tap and turned around, splashing the remaining water on Sang Zhi’s face. “I’ll give you two options. Go back and continue watching your stupid cartoons, or stay here and let me beat you.”
”Why are you angry?” Sang Zhi wiped the water off her face, frowned, and said, “It’s me who’s being scolded, not you.”
Sang Yan put the inner pot into the electric rice cooker without looking up. “The door is over there.”
Sang Zhi didn’t move and said seriously, “Just don’t tell anyone that we look alike.”
He scoffed and turned his head away, saying, “Who cares?”
After saying that, Sang Yan pinched her face, took the bowl of strawberries from her hand, and walked out of the kitchen.
Sang Zhi subconsciously rubbed her face. When she noticed that her hand was empty, her eyes widened, and she couldn’t believe it as she asked, “Why did you take my things?”
”How is it only yours?” Sang Yan picked up one, took a bite, and said, “Did you buy it with your money?”
Sang Zhi reached out to grab it, “I took it out of the fridge.”
Sang Yan casually lifted his hand. “But the fridge belongs to me too.”
She struggled, hopping around. “But once I took it out, it became mine.”
”According to your logic, now that I’ve taken it, it’s mine.”
”…”
They stood in a standoff for a while.
Just as Sang Yan was about to eat the fifth strawberry, the phone in his pocket rang. He glanced at Sang Zhi, subtly lowered the hand holding the strawberry, and used the other hand to check his phone.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Sang Zhi quickly jumped up and snatched the bowl back.
Sang Yan let out a low grunt and answered the phone, “What’s up?”
The person on the other end said something.
”I came back home. The dormitory had a power outage due to a violation of using prohibited appliances for a day. I came home for refuge,” he said. Then he paused for a moment and added meaningfully, “Don’t mention it, I somewhat regret it.
Sang Zhi returned to watching cartoons in front of the TV, ignoring him.
Sang Yan casually continued the conversation on the phone, “It’s okay. Unfortunately I stepped on shit.”
Holding the remote control, Sang Zhi turned up the volume of the TV.
Sang Yan was completely unaffected, and lazily talked to the person on the other end of the phone: “Qian Fei should have gone home too. You can ask Duan Jiaxu, he hasn’t gone home, but he might not be at school.”
Upon hearing the name she hadn’t heard in a long time, Sang Zhi’s gaze subconsciously shot a glance at him. She nervously fiddled with the remote control, afraid of leaving any traces, and quickly lowered her head.
She reduced the volume in silence.
A strange nervousness surged in her heart. She felt a slight tightness in her chest, her mind went blank, and she realized her breathing had become somewhat rapid. Her attention involuntarily focused on Sang Yan.
”How many times have you forgotten your keys?” Sang Yan added fuel to the fire, “Auntie definitely won’t give them to you, but you can try asking for a scolding.”
After that, he didn’t mention Duan Jiaxu again.
Thinking about what Sang Yan had just said, Sang Zhi immediately associated it with something crooked.
— Dragon Boat Festival, he didn’t go home, and might not be at school.
If that was the case, then he probably has a girlfriend.
But at his age, it was about time.
He could turn a meeting with a teacher into something like a blind date, so he must have one.
Anyway, it was not her concern.
If he has one, so be it.
It was not such a big deal.
The more Sang Zhi thought about it, the more suffocated she felt deep inside. Suddenly, she threw the plastic bowl in her hand onto the table, making a loud noise.
It just so happened that Sang Yan, who was sitting on the dining chair, ended the call. Noticing her inexplicable anger, he looked at her thoughtfully and asked, “Getting so worked up over watching a cartoon?”
Sang Zhi turned off the TV.
Sang Yan sighed, “Did Happy Sheep get caught by Grey Wolf again?”
Sang Zhi finally retorted, “I wasn’t watching that.”
Sang Yan didn’t seem interested, finished the last sip of water, and reminded her, “If you still want to watch, lower the volume on the TV. I’m going to take a nap.”
”Gege,” Sang Zhi suddenly called out to him.
”?”
Sang Zhi scratched her head, hesitated, and blurted out, “Are you the only one in your dorm without a girlfriend?”
”…” Sang Yan stared at her for a couple of seconds, then suddenly chuckled, “Little Devil, why are you so concerned about my personal life lately?”
Sang Zhi felt a bit guilty. “I was just asking.”
”Did Mom and Dad tell you to ask?”
”I’m just concerned about you,” Sang Zhi muttered, “I heard Mom saying that recently Aunt Chen wants to set up a match for her daughter. If you don’t have a girlfriend, it’s a good chance for you to meet someone.”
”…” Sang Yan paused for a moment, “Aunt Chen’s daughter?”
”Yeah.”
”Isn’t she in her forties?”
Sang Zhi blinked. “What’s wrong? Your conditions don’t allow you to be that picky either.”
”…” Sang Yan wanted to curse.
But he worried that this little devil would learn and use those words against him in the future.
”No need for your concern.” Sang Yan walked over, feeling annoyed, and knocked her head with an empty bottle. “Do you know why all my friends don’t have partners?”
Sang Zhi remained silent.
”Because they’re all lining up to date me,” Sang Yan said, “I came back home just to take shelter, you get it?”
Sang Zhi looked at him and didn’t argue this time, silently nodding.
She watched as Sang Yan tossed the bottle into the trash can in dissatisfaction, then got up and walked towards his room. But he quickly turned back and added, “Because I’m straight.”
Sang Zhi nodded again.
But she didn’t pay attention to anything else he said after that.
Only those four words were clear in her mind.
—No partners.
