SSC (BL) – Chapter 5

Zuo Qin was a ghost and naturally didn’t need to rest. He noticed the moment Xue Lin leaned closer, but he closed his eyes tightly and didn’t dare to open them. He only felt his heart and lungs pounding endlessly, almost jumping out of his throat.

The next moment, when Xue Lin directly hugged him tightly into his arms, Zuo Qin’s face almost exploded with red, and the deer in his heart directly keeled over.

Zuo Qin licked his dry lips, then secretly opened a crack to glance at Xue Lin, and found that the latter was sleeping soundly. His usually firm and serious face had softened, appearing a bit gentle.

Xue Lin brook no signs of waking up, so he boldly stared at him non-stop. He blushed the entire time, and it also intensified by the second. Xue Lin slept uncomfortably, and wrung his body, scaring the peeping ghost.

Zuo Qin swiftly shut his eyes and no longer dared to stare any further.  With a bit of sweetness in his heart, he actually slept in Xue Lin’s arms for the night.

Thus, the next morning, when Xue Lin woke up, the first thing he saw was Zuo Qin’s sweet sleeping face, which looked even more childish and soft, reminding him of a round white jade dumpling.

After staring for a while, Xue Lin suddenly realized what he was doing and was also hardly shy, so he hurriedly got off the bed. Although he was in a hurry, his hands were gentle enough to avoid waking up the sleeping Zuo Qin.

Zuo Qin wasn’t a voracious sleeper, and woke up in a daze when he felt no one around him. Xue Lin was having breakfast at the time and didn’t think much of it when he saw that he was awake. He just greeted him and called him to eat something too.

Zuo Qin shook his head somewhat grudgingly and said, “I can’t even eat human food, I can only smell it.”

Xue Lin fell in thought after hearing this and didn’t say more. After settling breakfast, they went up the mountain to hunt as usual. This was the first time Zuo Qin had openly accompanied Xue Lin on a hunt, so he was in mighty high spirits.

But in a corner where one person and one ghost didn’t even notice, there was an unsuspecting villain hiding.

It was Bastard Hunzi who ran all the way home in disgrace yesterday. After turning things over his mind for a long time, he got increasingly furious. He couldn’t explain the oddities, so he blamed Xue Lin for all of it.

He believed that Xue Lin had made him lose face, so early in the morning, when he saw that Xue Lin had gone hunting in the mountains, he took few other ruffians in the village and sneaked into Xue Lin’s house.

The only house in the south of the village was Xue Lin’s, so they were quite arrogant and unafraid of being seen. They pried the locks off the doors and turned Xue Lin’s place upside down, and finally found the silver taels that Xue Lin had saved over the years.

Bastard Hunzi’s eyes sparkled at the sight of the money. He took the handful of silver into the bosom and hid them from his brethrens,  wanting to privately swallow the money all to himself. He feigned anger and pretended to curse: “This poor guy doesn’t even have anything of value at home. Let’s demolish his house and see if he still dares to mess with me.”

The other ruffians thought nothing of it, and a few of them smashed Xue Lin’s house into a mess before leaving with satisfaction.

When Xue Lin and Zuo Qin returned home at noon, they saw that the door locks were wide open. There wasn’t a single intact place in the house, and even the porcelain bowls were shattered to pieces. Xue Lin’s veins throbbed fiercely, unable to contain his anger.

Zuo Qin was also furious, but he managed to calm down. After a quick sniff, he noticed a familiar scent in the air.

“Benefactor, it’s Bastard Hunzi! I can smell him!” Zuo Qin was sure that it must be the work of Bastard Hunzi, so he sold him out without hesitation.

Xue Lin wasn’t at all surprised at that news. Bastard Hunzi was a good-for-nothing, but petty minded. Having been disgraced yesterday, he would surely retaliate. He just didn’t expect it to come so quickly.

Xue Lin didn’t say anything else with a gloomy face. He directly picked up his wooden knife from the ground and stomped in rage towards Bastard Hunzi’s house to seek an explanation.

Zuo Qin wanted to follow, but he struggled with the idea of restoring his benefactor’s house to its original state. Therefore, it was rare that he didn’t go out with him.

When Xue Lin arrived at Bastard Hunzi’s house, he lost his usual manners and pounded on the door like a bandit, who came down the mountain, causing the neighbors to whisper in fear and dread.

It took half a dozen knocks before someone opened the door. She was a blind old woman. Xue Lin choked back the scolding that had risen to his throat.

The old lady was Bastard Hunzi’s mother, but Bastard Hunzi was worse than a pig and a dog. His mother was blind, but he didn’t give a damn about her mobility, spending the whole day running outside. His mother was wearing patched clothes and hadn’t even eaten. She barely had the strength to walk from the hunger. How could Xue Lin curse such an old woman?

“Aunti, do you know where Zhou Ba… Zhou Daniu went?” Xue Lin lowered his head and spoke to the old lady in as soft a tone as possible, Zhou Daniu was the name of that bastard.

“Daniu… He went out again after returning from a trip this morning in high spirits. He didn’t tell me where he was going either. What’s the matter? Did Daniu do something again?” It was said that no one knew a child better than his mother. The old lady knew exactly what her son was, so the first thing she thought of when someone came to the door was that something had happened again.

Xue Lin couldn’t say anything nasty at the blind and bony old lady, so he just sighed inwardly and said, “It’s nothing. I’m just asking if he’s home. Since he’s not there, I’ll leave first.”

Xue Lin returned home dejected and decadent, only to find his home back to its original state. There was  no need to guess whose writing it was, so he thanked Zuo Qin with some surprise.

Zuo Qin squinted his eyes beautifully at the compliment, but at the same time, he sensed that Xue Lin’s mood wasn’t quite right. He asked tentatively, “Benefactor, why did you come back so soon?”

Xue Lin’s mood collapsed again when the matter was brought up again. He dejectedly told the truth about the experience he had just had at the Zhou’s house. As expected, Zuo Qin got angry. Even though he had become a lonely ghost, he still remembered the golden rule about respecting one’s parents. But Bastard Zhou was even worse than a ghost.

“It ticks me off. Aunt Zhou is already disabled, yet that Bastard Zhou is still not doing good deeds. He’s really…really…” Zuo Qin couldn’t string his words for a while. He couldn’t cuss, at most he could just say he was an asshole. However, calling Bastard Zhou Bastard an asshole was an insult to all assholes.

Xue Lin looked at Zuo Qin’s bulging cheeks and felt somehow amused. His anger dissipated quite a bit, and ghostly reached out, pinching Zuo Qin’s bulging cheek. Both froze in an instant.

Xue Lin came back to his senses and even stood up rapidly, hiding the hand that pinched his face behind his back as if nothing had happened. The smooth and tender feel of his face seemed to have remained on his fingertips. Meanwhile, Zuo Qin quietly blushed.
